Hi All:
Before I start a (gasp!) disclosure: I also posted a similar message on "Magicians of Old" since I wasn't quite sure where the best place might be so if you've read it there, I apologize. Looking for some help/direction pointing on the early era of film--the silents. Besides Houdini who handled his own stunts, I'm trying to determine which other magicians, if any, lent their skills to Hollywood (or studios abroad) not necessarily as actors, but as "consultants"--using the techniques of magic to create death-defing and other stunts. Seems that magicians would be among the first people early filmmakers would turn to for this kind of assistance. As always, any info, ideas, etc. would be most appreciated. Best! gary |

I’m surprised this topic doesn’t have much discussion, then again I love silent movies. If you want to talk about special effects, there is one place to start and that is with the man considered the father of special effects-- George Méliès. Méliès was one of the most important pioneers of early cinema. He made over 500 films, of course his most famous being A Trip to the Moon. He was also a successful stage magician and owner of the Theatre Robert-Houdin in Paris. It was this background that fueled his imagination in regards to making motion pictures.

Do you need the actual source material or just the info? Only from the silent era?
David Devant (British magician) made two short films and George M. film him also. Here's a start: http://www.archive.org/details/TheMagicianSilentFilm1900 Enjoy. JerryB |

You might look for a book called _Magician and the Cinema_ by Erik Barnouw.
