Hi everybody,
I've been playing around with Larry Jenning's 'Gamblers Aces' routine taught in his book 'Classic Magic of Larry Jennings' and also, a variation that is taught in some Karl Fulves Riffle Shuffle notes. I'm just wondering, can any body direct me to any other variations of this routine as well as anywhere I might be able to see what the routine looks like when performed by somebody who has mastered it. Its a fun routine to learn for those interested in the intricacies of riffle shuffle technique, and for me at least, something that continuously requires practice. If your looking for something is not a 'buy it today, perform it tonight' piece, this is great. Any thoughts? Anybody tried learning it? mastered it? perform it regularly? Do you use the same handling? Regards, Ed |

Popcalinda,
That is not Gambler's Aces. Back No 67, I do Larry's trick but with a different set up that I think is much easier to get into and the second revelation is changed. You do the Benzais spinout on the second revelation rather than have to do a tabled tripple lift. You don't have a reversed card to start and all four aces start on top. I have a very nice presentation for the trick called the Mysterious Kid. I showed this version to Larry a long time ago and I think he felt it was pretty good. Steve Ehlers |

Steve Elhers 'Mysterious Kid' is on his Arizona Card Expert DVD and it is an excellent presentation. He has a similar and even better effect called 'Almost Johnson' which has some of the most imaginative patter I have come across for an ace cutting routine.

Steve: I'll see if I can hunt down a copy of your Mysterious Kid trick. I like the concept of cutting to the second ace face up but you have the right idea about changing the triple lift off the table. I swear that will be the death of me. Do you know any specific techniques for the lift? I currently just pick up the deck as thought its part of my patter and pinky count to 3. It works ok, but I'd prefer it if I could do it straight from the table - no get ready.

Ed,
Definitely pick up a copy of Steve's DVD. I believe he has Lectures Notes that contain both routine's, should you wish to learn them that way. Either way - I can promise you won't be disappointed!! Mark |

Ed,
The tripple lift never bothered me it was having to be so careful when shuffling to not flash the reversed card while feeding in another card. I believe the tripple lift as explained in the Classic Magic of Larry Jennings is pretty clear. You riffle up the side until you get a break beneath the three cards and lever them face up. In my experience with the trick the Benzais revelation is as strong and you don't have to worry about the tight handling. I have to close but I'll post something else later today. Steve |

I love the line in the video "All the card cheat needs to do is put the one ace face up in the deck, give a little wave and click."

Ed,
Here is something that might be of interest to you. I originally read Gamblers Aces in a Karl Fulves Folio about 30 years ago. I loved the trick and worked on it for about 7 years off and on; however, I never performed it for people because I didn't have a presentation for it. It really needs a nice presentation because there is a lot of shuffling and cutting and without a good presentation the trick is just not as entertaining. One day I sat down and really decided to work on a presentation and came up with The Mysterious Kid. It was during the course of working on the presentation that I realized I needed to change the second revelation so the trick flowed better. As it is now the trick runs about 2 1/2 minutes and is what I would term a performance piece. There is so much to learn from this one trick that can be applied to other routines. I wish you much luck and if you need any help please let me know. Best Wishes, Steve |
