The first "alternative" circus I had the pleasure to see, was the Royal Lichtenstein 1/4 Ring Sidewalk Circus, in the early 1970s. It was the invention of Nick Weber, a sometime Jesuit priest, with sawdust in his blood, and toured for 20+ years.
The RLC never had a cast of thousands, yet it was a training ground for a lot of first-class performers. The show featured juggling, acrobatics, animals, music, comedy, storytelling, and sideshow skills. Nick is now retired, living in Milwaukee. For the last couple of months, he's been writing about his career, posting it on Salon.com. http://open.salon.com/blog/delible will guide you to Nick's blog. It's a delightful read!

Thanks for this Harley, The Royal Liechtenstein was a big influence on me also. It completely changed my focus from wanting to join a big circus to wanting to create a little circus of my own. I ran into Nick many years later when he was clowning with Carson & Barnes and we corresponded for a while after that. Now I can get back in touch. What a great little circus he created!

Wow!!! what a Gem Harley, I always wondered where Nick landed...I crossed paths many times with RLC...either they visiting the show I was on...or vice-versa...just glancing at his Blog seeing many photos of freinds brings back memories from a time that has passed, but surely not forgotten...Thanks Harley for sharing this....
