The Mechanics Shift
By Jo Sevau and Richard Hucko Price: $10 Where At? http://www.vanishingincmagic.com/ http://www.vanishingincmagic.com/mag...chanics-shift/ Thoughts: Well this move is a fun one it's actually quite difficult very move monkey esc BUT it can be used just as well in a Real performance. Its a one handed shift of a card. This 45 minute download includes so much material (Which I will get to in a moment) but man colour changes. The multiple shift is amazing and I love the split you can even get the card into a palm!. Its definitely one of those moves you need to work on but will be well worth it. Im enjoying it so far and have been playing around with it for the last week or so. The boys have done an amazing job on expanding one move. Its one of those moves you can just sit at the tv drink in one hand cards in other and just practice. Lets get into this further. What you will Learn: A nice amount here but you can judge yourself. The Basic Mechanics Shift Covering Actions For the Basic Mechanics Shift More Covers Control To The Bottom From Centre (With Covers) Two Handed Centre To Top Control Mechanics Shift To Palm Centre To Palm Table Palm Palm Transfer Colour Changes The Split Multiple Control More Tips So There is a lot included in here Some of my favourites are the Palm, Multiple Control, The Split and the Control Ill Talk about a few of these Applications Mechanics Shift To Palm: The Mechanics shift to palm is a great way to get a card into palm with one hand but you can also get a card from the top of the deck to palm in the hand holding the deck! This is a little variation on the move with changes the dynamics completely. The Multiple Control: A really fun piece though the cards arent really insterted into the packet as such they are all controlled individually the packets of cards either need to be on a table or held by seperate spectators. Table Palm: The Table Palm utilises the palming version of the shift and has a similar display as the The multiple control but you can be holding both halves of the pack at this point. The Mechanics Shift As a Whole: The move is a tough one but recommended. There arent really a vast aray of single card one handed shifts besides a few that people know E.g The Clipshift and such and probably plenty more but as far as I've seen there aren't a whole lot. A one handed shift if you looking for something to practice. Show your Magician friends, use in performance I really think you will enjoy this especially some of you move monkeys. Teaching: Jo and Richard do an excellent job of explaining the move. Every Nuance everything is explained extensively. They explain the move standing and sitting with mutiple camera angles to give you guys a good look at every finger and every action. Vanishing Inc has done a great job and I applaud them I'm not dissapointed with what I got. that's all for now I recommend this I'm sure you will enjoy it and practice it!! Until next time Tom |

It's a great move/tool with lot's of practical applications.
You should also check out Richard and Jo's DVD "Subtle Concepts" for more great card magic. You'll be really glad you did. |

Can this be done slow, and more importantly, is it silent?

So I took the plunge, and here's a quick review to help magis on the fences decide if it's for them. More in a few weeks' time when I've practiced enough to use in place of my regular bottom control.
The Mechanics Shift mirrors Nelson's Clip-Shift. It's a one-handed one-card shift. Jo and Richard took the simple concept and squeezed much more mileage out of it than I thought possible, and it was $10 well-spent (even though I've worked out the same mechanics before...) If you had put time in the CS you'll have the MS down right away. And if you haven't, it will probably take a few weeks to get up to speed. That said, the inherent positioning makes MS much easier than the CS to get into a performable state. Like the CS, this is a speed sleight. The one-handedness means that you're exposed during the execution of the MS (the front is the only really good angle). However, it does not work by gravity, and you have many available covers (and then, many many more when the other hand comes in play). Being quick and smooth shortens the exposure, but this is still not angle-proof. This is NOT a silent move at speed - the cards crackle and pop in the teaching video. It's easier than the CS in that you don't need to get the shifted card completely aligned. If you're looking for just a bottom control for a replaced card, look elsewhere: there are completely angle-proof, noiseless swindles in the literature that can be done ultra slowly and fairly. As a control to top, you might as well as the audience to close their eyes and do a Charlier cut. You may get more mileage out of the controls if you work seated at tables. Where this really shines is in the palm applications. The MS can serve as a one-handed DPS(!) and that's awesome. The palm transfer is pretty cool, even though I don't know what good it's for yet. It's a move that I will practice, so more on that when it's fully in my repertoire. |

Move monkeys like me will certainly love to add this to their arsenal...
...but I don't think Clipshifters will find this easy... as it involves the other hand... will take a lot a lot practice to get smooth

I do the CS with either hand
That said, the mechanics is slightly different in that MS uses the pinky as the driver as opposed to the ring finger in CS. It's very hard to not flash when doing the palm :/ |

And silent, H**L NO! Although even the authors in the DVD claim it is silent, every time they do it there is loud "THUD" hear when card slides against the deck. They don't do it silently even ONCE on the whole download. Some sort of restaurant noise would be enough to cover the noise. If you have played with clipshift, you might have idea about the noise this one usually makes. It is similar to the noise that most people had when they were starting out with clipshift or have small hands. Invisible... From certain angles, not all. Even from angles that it is invisible, there is usually tell moves that happen like other movement of the deck. Move monkeys might find this fun but to me the move is just a reminder that the brute force move isn't allways the best sleight option to use. In my eyes the move is just that, way to move card around the deck with brute force. |

As far as practical/performance goes, it seems to make more sense to use the two handed approach which has great cover. A riffle is enough to cover any noise. Richard seems to like using the riffling action in the top card cover approach, color change, palm, and transfer - they look great and any bit of noise is covered. In Jo's Split approach it seems like any noise would be associated in the card splitting to two other cards so makes sense. In the video, they never claim it's silent and they do give some nice tips on how to reduce the noise.
I'm glad they decided to do the download since I was trying to learn it since I got their Subtle Concepts DVD... The verbal explanations in the DL helped me greatly and I've already started using it as a bottom control via the two handed approach. It works great! ...now if I could just master doing it to palm.

On the topic of silence.
IMO -- The sound of this move may be compared to slowly flipping the page of a paperback book. Thus entitled to my opinion the move does in NONE of the applications - make a loud "thud" or "scratch" or "bark" or "Hi bob!" Must you feel the need to make it completely silent there are some nice tips on how to do - just that ^_^ |
