Has anybody here had a Morgan Dollar Shell from Johnson Magic? I'm thinking about buying it because the price is low for a silver dollar shell but I was wondering if the quality wasn't that bad. Any reviews?:)

I think the tough thing about Morgan [s is finding coins that fit properly and match the "look" of the shell.
My dad collected Morgan dollars for years. I went to his house this weekend with the Expanded [ from my Lassen Triple Threat set. I wanted to be able to use it for a regular Expanded [ as well as part of my Triple Threat. I went through many Morgans before finding four that would fit my [ perfectly. I luckily found four, but only four. Good luck finding matching coins. Your best bet is probably a coin shop that will let you spend some time with their cull Morgans. It took me quite a while to find the right coins at my dad's.

Antique malls also usually have a few booths that sell morgan dollars, sometimes cheaper than coin shops.
Sammy is right. Finding the right match is difficult. If you don't like rummaging through coins (plus, explaining to the coin seller without tipping the issue is also fun), the easy way out is buying the set from someone like Lassen. Regards. A. |

I would agree with Sammy and BM here, tracking down good matching Morgans is an adventure for sure. I don't use the gaff stuff much but still wanted some soft Morgans. For me, I find that specs don't pick up on whether coins are good matches or exact matches. Perhaps they will notice if 2 coins are different colors or sizes at best but I have a set of 4 very soft Morgans that I use all the time and at best they look sorta alike and that seems to work just fine when showing effects as the specs just see Morgans. I would think a Johnson Morgan Shell would look pretty new then making you have to use new Morgans which are awfully noisy and hard. If it's not a problem for you then that's good as Johnson products are super and great values. But the softer Morgans seem better in general to manipulate and use IMHO, the softer the better. That's my $1.00 and 2 cents on it.

I happen to use a Morgan Shell a lot.
I own one from Johnson and its okay - rocks a bit with a coin in it, has a patina that is somewhat different and strange from all my other coins, but in general is passable. I practice with it all the time. I also have a Morgan Shell I purchased from Lassen. This is perfection - much much easier to handle, indistinguishable from other coins and just a joy to own. They are NOT the same quality.
To see a difficult thing lightly handled gives the impression of the impossible.

I just received a soft WL Expanded [ set from Lassen today. I know, I fell off the gaffaholic wagon, but for good reason. This set is great. All coins match and fit the [ perfectly. The [ quality is beyond any I have seen.
It is more expensive to go to Todd. But I assure you that if you make the investment, you will not regret it. I'm not sure what to say at my next gaffaholism meeting. I'm thinking about not going. Sammy

Sammy, that's hilarious...
I agree w/ MB, soft coins seem all around easier to handle. They don't have much milling to speak of, but they're just buttery in the hands, slide around smoothly – all those good coin porn traits coin magicians love. Up in Canada, even here in Toronto, coin stores with decent stocks of Morgans are hard to come by, so matching a soft shell would be extremely difficult. So I, too, took the shortcut, and bought a Lassen set. And I have to agree, if you can afford it, it IS quite awesome. |

Oh well I'm gonna start with the affordable options first or else my father is going to think I'm crazy:P But I will definitely consider getting a Lassen set. (hopefully a unexpanded set!)
without really wanting to change the topic, I'm really curious about if it's just me or Todd really really dislikes Jamie Schoolcraft :S ?

Johnson makes a good expanded Sh**L. I have a several Morgans and a Peace one. They are durable and cover most of the coin. Johnson polishes all their coins so the coins you get from them will be shiny so you can match them up with other coins to make a set but you may have to polish some coins to make them match. With the price of Silver approaching $20 an ounce now is the time to buy silver gaffs. Prices will be going up if it goes over $20. With all the Money that is being printed right now and Gold soaring I would expect silver to follow suit and coin gaffs with it.

Hey TC,
I just had a thought. With the price of silver climbing do you think the government would allow us to purchase silver coin gaffs in our IRA or 401-K? Now that would be a fun investment! Sammy

Sammy,
As a confirmed Gaff-A-Holic myself I only wish that would be a possibility. One can only dream. TC |

I just received my Lassen WL Expanded shell set and it's just perfection. All the coins have matching detail and wear, and the fit of the shell is great.
Sure it's more expensive, but it's well worth it. Johnson stuff is a great value, but Lassen products are a treasure and a pleasure. If you have a great routine that you think your going to perform for years, get a Lassen set. They maintain their value more then any other gaffed coin too. My .50 cents. |
