Creative as always.
I'm sure you're right, there must be something in this.

Hmmm.
We usually want our audiences to admire our heroism, our expertise, our ability to get out of tight circumstances. This, however, is sad. I've never seen an escape that has this as the primary emotional concept.

Sadness can be very powerful if used in the right way. I'm not sure how this could be done within an escape though.....
... I'm thinking as I type so this may end up quite long and disjointed, so I apologise now... Hmm, usually the escape is a symbol of freedom. Of breaking out of something that is holding us back. The restraints are the "bad guy" the enemy. Where as there are many things that bind us that are good. Marriage being one of those things. When you love someone you are, in a sense, restrained by that love. The escape in this instance could symbolise the deterioration of love or the loss of a loved one. With each restraint that comes off there is less and less of us being held to the person we once loved. Like memory, over time they fade. We learn to move on. To free ourselves from the love we once had. In this instance the act of escaping becomes a metaphor for that passage of time. In my mind I've got a stage. The escape artist is on one side lit by a simple down lighter. The escape happens within that single shaft of light. Once out the escape artist walks off in to the darkness leaving only a pile of restraints. Hmm... The binding process itself could also be turned on its head. During the restraining the stage could be lit with bright vibrant colours. The binding being done by an assistant who is the escapists love. In the background on a large screen is a film depicting their life together. Birthdays, Christmas, holidays etc... Kind of like an old cine film. Once bound the film fades. The girl gives the escapist one last kiss and walks off backwards arms out stretched as the stage lights fade away to darkness leaving the escapist in the single shaft of light as described above. Quite a moving piece if performed by the right person. I don't know if I could do it justice myself.

You gave me chills with that scenario Roslyn. I wish I had opportunity to do something like that...

I forgot, I HAVE heard of a sad one.
One year, I sold Siberian Chains, in different lengths, so that a person could be on each end. Naturally, the configuration for each was different. James Biss bought one, and did a showpiece with it. It was about the dissolution of a relationship. A single overhead spot, the two performers on the edges of the light, chain stretched between them, circling, a pas de deux. Voiceover pointing out that when one person is free, the other often continues to carry the chains, etc. Beautiful. Sad.

Ros,
That was really beautiful. Quite artistic. My only issue is that the thought of people in the audience crying when I'm done doesn't sit well. I will happily take stunned silence, gasps, even laughter, bit not tears. Still the mood you set was incredible.

Any emotion is fair game. But we often avoid the thing that makes us uncomfortable. In a way, this limits our abilities as performers.
To me, the hardest part is usually figuring out effective transitions.

Glad you guys "like" the idea, but you should all blame Harley for kick starting the whole thing off.
Wish I was in a position to try this out too, could be amazing! Hey, if anyone's looking for an ideas consultant on a big show I'M YOUR MAN!!! Yes, ME over here
