"Audiences" are not a static creature. They evolve each and every time they see a show. Magic is not evolving with them which is why you see so many guys with the same absolute crap on the video and calling the magic "classics", while at the same time claiming to be a "unique blend of comedy and magic".
When an audience sees a trick they have been exposed to it. Maybe not method, but certainly to the outcome. Where is the "magic"? In the entertainment value! Part of this is certainly fooling them when the know full well what the outcome is going to be.

I can language behaviorism. Does that help you? Getting back to goals - it's a show - and seemingly impossible stuff is supposed to be happening and I'd like for them to enjoy the experience.

Right -- spectators can be conditioned to give rewarding responses for effects that either entertain them or mystify them -- based on prior 'exposure' to performance magic To this end I am suggesting that perhaps all exposure can be beneficial, and that the worse scenario is an audience with no exposure at all. Their behavior can be partially measured by responses, but only relative to norms of behavior about which we must guess. The question is, how do you modify your performance based on this observed behavior? and how are societal changes affecting these 'norms'?
