Hi! I've just receive a call and I've been hired to do 3 shows, one per month from june to august. The thing is they've asked me to do different routines on each show.
If the shows were in my city, I would have said: "sorry, my show is unique and it changes every year or so". But the shows are going to be in another estate, a city I've never performed, so I agreed because it could be, and it will be, a new font for business. I normally work with adults, but this is a kids show, for me its more complicated... I do a 40min show. I managed to build up two repertoires. The opener and closer is almost impossible to change. Been picking up some old rope routines and stuff... Still, I have 30 days between shows to gather up ideas... I'm thinking of buying hippity hop rabbits to get new things to add. Well, I work very hard with patter, structure of the trick, etc. when choosing my tricks, and imagine when I'm structuring my show. How do you handle this? Perform the same show changing 1 or 2 things? (my dad said to do this) Perform a completely different show each time? (I think I'll try to do this) Does anyone has two repertoires? With adults I have a mentalism show and the "normal" show. But that's entirely different. |

Hi,
Take your dad's advice (always good advice from your dad!) and also try to add 2 new things into the show / routine. Adding new things and performing things in a different order or manner should be suffice. Question: Why do they want you to perform two entirely different routines? TGR

This is probably because it is the same audience.
My advice for show structure would be to pick a theme and run with it. This will allow your mind to flow around that theme. I currently offer 6 completely different themed shows each year. I hope the pay is very good as it can take a lot of effort and money to build new programs. I suggest asking this question in the little darlings section as not all the children's entertainers look at this section. |

Well, thanks!
wow! 6 completely different themed shows! Although I do not have a specific theme on my show, I usually work a lot around a routine, write the patter, try it, change it, etc. Having 6 different shows would be a madness for me. The pay is not that good. Like I said, I'm doing it more for the potentially new clients, because I've never been in that city. I'll see what I can do :S thanks! |

I have several different shows for children's or family audiences. However, material has been added over years. One of the things you'll discover, is what material is strong / fits your personality, and what isn't. Then you replace the weaker tricks by selling them off, and buying other tricks.
There are about 40-50 tricks I can possibly use in my show, but I only use 6 to 9 at a time in a show. If I needed to perform again for the same audience, I could plan a new show out of the rest of the tricks that I own / perform. And of course, don't forget to practice. Especially for material you haven't learned yet, or don't perform as often. - Donald

Hi Donald!
I was thinking about that. I do have some tricks I've never performed for kids such as T&R newspaper or any rope routine. I'm thinking about taking new material to try it so I can dispose of what didn't fit with my character. thanks! |

Yeah, it takes time to add to the show, and to add solid winners too. You can go out and buy a lot of tricks, but without time and patience, those tricks wont be as effective until they are performed in front of real audiences. I currently have 80 minutes of material that I can present and it was accumulated over several years.
