I found this coin magic demonstration on YouTube and was wondering if anyone could give me any insight into how much is prestidigitation and how much is camera tricks since I haven't done much with coin magic myself. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=hwVy_2eOfsE#t=78

Thanks for posting the link. That's Lu Chen of Taiwan. He is a brilliant performer. I don't think what we are seeing is camera tricks. I will leave it to those more knowledgeable than myself to give the names and histories of the mysteries he performs in this tape, but I think that what we are seeing is pure legerdemain.

Camera tricks, no. However, you are only seeing what the camera wants you to see. That and a gaff and special table make for some great magic.

The cameras control your frame of view, that's about it.
There are 10 other threads on this, some very long ones. You will find them eventually. here are a few... http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=202 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=3 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=111 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=202 If Liu Chen ever performs this on Letterman, he'll probably end up with his own section here on the Café.

You can see several OTHER miraculous routines of Lu Chen at http://www.petebiro.com
If he ever worked on Letterman? Why would he when he does his own TV Specials now.

He would do well on a U.S. tour.

His performance at the table has all the ingrediants of really great magic...mysterious seemingly straightforward coin effects, that really build as a wonderful routine should, fantastic pacing, and Lu Chen has just the right disarming charisma and a hint of wonder about him.
It's no mystery why there have been so many threads postings about him performing this. Instant classic, in my book.

I think it is a very shocking performance - isn't the routine itself essentially Dean Dill's Triangle?

Shocking? In effect, or that he does Dean's Triangle in a differnt setting. Lu Chen is a big customer and fan of Dean and Joe Porper's props. See more of his work at my web site (he does my Linking Finger Rings and Just A Key).

Pete,
Thanks for the post. I can see where Dean has had an influence on him. I was at Dean's shop a week ago and saw him do his Triangle for someone and even though I have seen him do it many times I still love to watch him do it. Best, TC |
