Here is a random, or not so random, question for the Café. IBM has some 12,000 members and The Café has some 43,700 registered members. So ... how many magicians are there in the World?
I would suggest some categories like: - Full time professional (magic is primary source of income) - Part time professional (magic as income, but not primary) - Amateur (not paid) the last category would be most subjective -- If a person purchases a magic trick at a shop when on vacation do they count? Not sure. But other two categories should be clean. I tried a web search, but was not successful. Thoughts? Hudson |

An astronomical number.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

There is of course only one truly professional magician in the world - and that is the one you are talking to at any given moment - all others are complete amateurs... until it's their turn to talk to you, at which point they become the only true professional.

Thoughts? I'm not a magician, and I have nearly 6,000 posts. (Half are uncounted).
Tommy is also not a magician, I don't think (forgive me Tommy if I'm wrong), and has 11,000 posts. That's 17,000 posts by two non-magicians. Surely it's only a fraction of the 3,315,211 + posts here at the Café, but if you add ALL the non-magicians, wannabe-magicians, pseudo-magicians, embarrassingly incompetent magicians (around 99%?), then that would leave us with the obvious observation that the vast majority of posts are not being made by real magicians. Whatever a real magician is. What was the question? There was a flaw in my logic or math somewhere. I'm just to illogical and unmathematical to know where it is. |

There are many requirements needed to be a successful magician, and I think that very few have enough of them to qualify as a full time professional magician.

I am a dilettante who is occasionally forced to perform magic professionally.

I found two definitions of dilettante. Are you a gourmet chocolate from the Pacific North West, or are you one who dabbles?

I, on the other hand, am a well trained and extremely talented magician who just happens to have social disorders....I can't stand humans with five exceptions and those five are all here.

Wow -- I guess this was an interesting question to bring up -- lots of responses, but answers! Does that mean we have no idea on how many magicians there are?

No, it means every halfwit who can make his thumb come off thinks he's a magician.

There are a lot of prop tecnitions that call themselves magicians, but they are just prop tec's, or illusionist (a prop tec that gets paid lots of money). If your show consists of mostly self working magic tricks then you are only fooling yourself. A magician is one who has talent, skill, and performs real magic.

Pakar, haven't you ever read the Bible?
Personally, I reckon the number of magicians as 43,765 and counting, the newest one being Bill Sayer. |
