Based on a suggestion by Arnie here is a new thread dedicated to mistakes that have happened in game. What happened, did anyone notice, and if so how did you recover?
Please share if you have a story to tell. I think we can all learn a bit from the kind of quick thinking that is the mark of a professional. “The resourceful professional failing to improve the method changes the moment.” - SWE Ein D |

Thanks Ein D.
Let's be the first, a short story then. It was I think 5 years ago in France. You must understand that HE was hardly spreading among people (mainly young people!) in that country. Packs of beginners awaiting to battle with cards. A (young) mate of mine tells me they need a 8th or 9th player in a private wannabe tourney. Was something like $25 buy-in and 60-40 for the prize, say 135/90 or 120/80, something like that. Average guys are about 24-25 years old. There's one girl playing HE for the first time. Yep old fellows, what you could call a veeeeery loose context lol. They play correctly though and the evening is cool. Plastic cards, cut card, some kind of procedures required for shuffling/cutting anyway. No need to point out it's the perfect environment to practice some moves. By that time I was trying to find a good method to Greek deal. It lasted just a few weeks and I'm not using such stuff anymore. Too much work required and so far from been "natural". Well, for me. Then, I used an improved bottom deal. Here's what happened. The method I used is very simple, when you wash the pack you keep 2 good cards on the bottom. You shuffle, false running cut, etc. At the end of the sequence the slug in on the bottom. You put the deck in the left hand and while squaring it you take a break above the slug. Then, very openly, you grab the cut card and insert it into the break. You have then, from the top, 50 cards, the cut card, and the slug made of 2 cards. You just have to bottom deal! You then deal pretty fast, paying attention not to hold the deck to high... Unfortunately, I missed the break and I inserted the cut card above the last one of the slug! Then, when I dealt, for my second card I grabbed... THE CUT CARD! Trust me, you've got to think at light speed boys. Immediately I shouted "holly ****, you have forgotten to remove the cut card before shuffling! Again! Pay attention guys, it's the tenth time tonite". And it really was! It's a common mistake with beginners not to remove the cut card before shuffling the deck. But the funny part of it was that of course the cut card had been removed because I inserted it at the end of the pack before dealing! I shuffled, cut and dealt myself! But no one noticed that, no one complained! I really think it's a key point when you miss a move to react very very fast. Anyway, we decided it was a misdeal (come on!) and we started over a new round. It's 5 years probably I have never attempted such a bad technique. I wonder what would have happened in a more serious private/friendly tourney ($100+ buy in) or a $500+ cash game! Doc, can you imagine that, dealing the cut card in one of your games? Lol. Two points to keep in mind I think. First, some contexts are very loose. You really can try virtually anything! When people know nothing about card cheating, you can bring a Magician marked deck or even a deck punched with nails ! The second point is how to react when you miss. I think you've got to be very fast of course, because you have to fool the minds, to confuse them. One nice way is to shout, to moan loudly. Of course, it was a very loose place and not much money involved. But I have seen the same kind of players and the same environment for much higher buy-ins. Well, they are limits, of course, but loose context or not knowledgeable people have nothing to do with the total of money played. |

LOL Great story Arnie thanks! Great example of thinking on your toes. I honestly don't know if I could come up with an out on the fly in some situations. Like CRD Sharper says in Road Hustler
"Do cardio" Running a mile may save your life Thanks again Arnie, great story! |
