Hey,
I have a site on google that is top 2 in my area when searched with almost every search phrase that includes 'magician' or 'magic show'. It took me awhile to get there and I don't see people knocking it down either (knock on wood ). That said, I build my own sites now and took the time to learn some proper optimization, especially for google. I was thinking of building a 2nd site, which would have different content but be advertising my magic show and the same services I provide. The main page would be different in content and look. Example; right now my site talks about me using my full name in the content; in my new one, the logo (jpeg) will say my full name, but nowhere in the actual text will it. It will just refer to me by my first name or refer to it as 'Michael's Magic Show' etc etc. My question is, will google punish me for having 2 sites in the same category, even if they differ in content? As I mentioned, I am in the top 2 of my first webpage and have no doubts I can make it to the top 5 with my new one if I launch it. I just don't want to have my first site, which is also my primary source of marketing (50% of clients find me through the web) be dropped down. I do feel if I have another site, it will increase my chances that much of being booked simply because people will see 2 sites of mine and it will drop someone else off the first page. Another thing to keep in mind is nowhere on the site will it say my full name, none of the files will be the same, the hosting is different and so it the domain name...would google even be able to tell I have two sites?? The only spot where it says my full name is in the logo, which is a jpeg, and I don't think they can read Jpegs?? Thanks. Michael |

Michael,
your good to go.. Multiple sites is how you take over the front page.. things to take into account when setting this up 1. use separate hosting companies (or SEOHost.com) this is so your sites are showing on separate IP Classes (not sure it matters because tests are EHH but its better to be safe) 2. Both sites need Unique content 3. build a 2nd page on both sites and rank it for your keyword phrase then you have 4 front page rankings ... no they can't read Jpegs.. but it doesn't matter from MASSIVE testing a duplicate content penalty dosent carry across domains but unique content will help in rankings and 4. generate backlinks

Hey Mike,
A few additional questions. 1/ What would you say the best way to generate backward links would be? 2/ So, you think I should make another page in my site, say my 'Birthday Page' optimized for google as well? 3/ Does my content have be completely different on EVERY page or just the index/home page? Which pages does google crawl?? Also, I am using completely sepearte hosting companies, so that should be good, but can they tell if they were built from the same IP address?? Thanks for your help. I love answering questions about google..
1. backlinks are a touch subject and there are MANY ways to do it.. an easy way is social bookmarking and article marketing (I spend a lot of time teaching this in my course) 2. YES if you have multiple pages ranking for a single phrase you can receive a indented listing which gets a higher click through rate 3. on seperate sites 50 to 70% unique .. great way to rewrite content is to go sentence by sentence Google will crawl ANY page it can find... use a robot.txt file to control what Google can see and index

Try some of the other advertising avenues out there . . . our services are very similar to gigmasters etc. . . somewhere I thought I read that position 3 is clicked on as much or even more that position 1 - so try to get your business listing on these 2ndary sites too . . . there are 9 more free results you can try to get listed on that first results page too . . .
