Jeff77, That you consider that you get a 'great reaction' from presenting the effect is a theatrical judgement that doesn't contribute to answing the question you originally asked.
You asked Café contributors if they thought this type of effect should be done in the type of venue you're working in where there's an audience consisting of 25% children. That the effect, 'gets a great reaction', is not in itself an indication that presenting such an effect in such an environment is a wise thing to do. What makes it a wise decision to do, or not do, will depend more on your audience's, your booker's and your own determination and assessment of the social responsibility (if any) that you might shoulder by presenting such an effect. This, I believe, should be what determines whether you should consider including it in the first instance. As such it's a morally based judgement not one based on how well the effect goes over. If you decide it's ok to consider including the effect, then, whether you actually do or not, will depend on how well it goes over... that's when you make your theatrical judgement on the effect.

The first magic show I ever saw at 8 years old was Russ Burgess performing the Razor Blade Trick. Do you happen to know if Russ is still performing? I haven't seen him in at least 15 years. At that time, he did tell me that he was considering retirement. At least getting off the road. He had fair work all over the northeast, but it was getting tougher with so much new blood coming into fair management. -MJ |
