I recently acquired a DVD that would not play on my DVD player. The packaging says that it is done in "PAL" mode, which I believe is the video display mode used in Europe, and which is not compatible with American televisions. (This was a DVD issued in Germany).
But I have also read that such a DVD probably would play on a DVD drive installed in a computer, and could display on a computer monitor. Before I risk putting this DVD into my computer's DVD drive, can anyone verify whether this is true or just another Urban Legend? Also wondering if the "PAL" issue is the same or different from the "Region" issue (a DVD issued for sale in the U.S. will not play on a DVD player sold in Europe, and vice-versa). Any help for the video-challenged would be appreciated! SETH

It should work on your computer, since a computer monitor can display a wide variety of screen resolutions that a TV can't. It won't hurt anything to try.
Check to see if it's set to a Europe-only region or world-wide. If it's world-wide (or no region, same thing) then it should play fine. |

PAL is the video format and is not related to Regions.
Region is a code producers embed in the DVD to avoid a recording to be watched in diferent places it was intended. Some DVD players are allowed only to play DVD's made for some (or only for one) Region. PAL is a video standard used in Europe. NTSC is used in North America. Your computer won't be damaged by playing it but a household DVD player probably won't be able to reproduce it. |

Thanks everyone for the information.
I did try to play the DVD on my computer drive last night, but no luck -- the drive did not recognize it. BTW, the DVD has a log on it that says "PAL - 6"; it's a video of Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra. Guess I'll have to move to Germany to see this DVD! SETH

Hey Seth,
I work in video production and did a quick search on ebay. You'll need something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/All-REGION-FREE-Mult......f2e081c5 Which can play NTSC and PAL DVDs and also any region. This should do the job for you. Stu |
