Does anyone know of any "Froggy went a courtin'" routines meant to be done while singing (or playing a recording of) the song?
I may have to come up with one if not.

Do kids today know what the words mean? Do they teach "courtin' " in today's sex-ed classes?

Lol!
Probably not, but they figure it out by the second verse.

Albion Magic have a nice frog on a lily pad trick. Axtell has a brilliant Bullfrog - can be produced from a Duck Pan. Or, why not learn to twist a balloon frog?

Are you using the Bob Dylan lyrics?
http://www.bobdylan.com/#/songs/froggie-went-courtin All 19 verses? Does the cat eat the mouse and rat, and the duck swallow Froggie? How far are you taking this? It could be the most exciting thing in your show! Will it give the kiddies nightmares?

I still use old songs. Sometimes on my harmonica and more lately on my ukulele.
For summer reading theme of Make a Splash at your Library, I have been using the Gilligan's Island Theme. The kids only know what I make of it that day, while the parents and the grandparents sing along in the back of the room. Now where is my Dylan song book? uh huh uh huh you get a line and I'll get a pole honey..... uh huh uh huh Harris mixing metaphors and words...

This song is a favorite of mine. It goes back at least to 1590, as I have found lyrics from that far back. I doubt the tune was identical, but the story the song tells certainly is. I sing it with my banjo and have done it in sing-alongs with my kids' classes. Never did think of putting it into a magic act.
There are versions of the song that don't end with death and dismemberment. When I sing it with kids, I finish with these three verses (trimmed to make it easier to type them): So frog and mouse rode off to France/ That's the end of my romance Yes that's the tale of him and her/ They're raising tadpoles covered in fur Little piece of cornbread sitting on a shelf/ Want any more you gotta sing it yourself. The happy ending and the silly image of their children really seems to amuse the adults. -Patrick |

Barry Mitchell has a frog and fly routine you might look into. It's not exactly Froggy Went a-Courtin' but it might give you some idea.s
