I have created my first iPhone trick which if I say so myself I think is pretty cool! I don't believe the method has been done before and it is totally different to most iPhone tricks out there. It appears to be a totally organic trick. It is too early to give specific info on the effect as I need to protect the idea until it is released.
My question is as this is my first app, how much would you be prepared to pay for a new trick for the iPhone? Thanks!

I've been quite vocal in the past that many of the magic effects available for the iPhone are priced far too cheaply. Now given that most of them are crap, but even the good ones are seriously undervalued. I understand that the creator wants to make a lot of sales and believes a lower price will facilitate that, but I worry that we're selling some great secrets far too cheaply. Of course, I also feel the same way about magic retail in general.
Anyways, if the product is truly worth it, you should price it what it's actually worth, and what you lose in volume, you make up in value. For example, I would've gladly paid at least $20 for iForce, and indeed probably would've gone as high as $50 for it. It is not uncommon for me as a professional to drop several hundred dollars on a item... sometimes just to use it as an interesting bit of flavor as a prop for a routine. In a sense, this prevents dilution of an effect, since as a pro, I like to present effects that I know are not being performed by every other performer out there (if I see one more presentation of Origami, I'm going to rush the stage and personally fold up the performer for real).

But surely professional magicians do not use magic on an iphone for serious performances. Everyone (nearly) knows the basic features of an iphone that it has a g sensor, touch screen - so surely any trick on an electronic device would be dismissed as simple electrickery! Therefore, can you price a piece of 'fun magic' on the same league as a piece of professional magic? I really think my trick will fool people but I can't justify charging $20 for example for it. Maybe I am wrong.

What Philemon said.
If you walked into a magic shop and someone said they had a killer effect and it was $2.99 wouldn't you wonder how good it could be if the creator only thought it was worth $3? And why wouldn't someone use an iPhone for a "serious" performance? It's more common than a deck of cards. Jay Jennings

I do understand Philemon's point. However I don't know of any professional magician who has used an iphone trick at a gig (that is just in my experience). When a magician does a trick with cards or coins etc, if the magician is good enough then it is the MAGICIAN who gets the credit. If you bring a piece of technology into the equation that does the magic such as a phone, then the phone will get the credit with the consumer wrongly thinking it was voice activated, or the way it is turned over or some other electronic method. I am not dissing magic for the iphone (far from it as I have created one). I just feel that iphone magic is for casual enviroments and can't be priced at $20, $30 or $50 dollars like professional magic tricks

Hi Angelo I suppose this question is dependent on many things, knowing you have had items produced by Tenyo you may wish to follow their lead on the app front and give them a cheaper price leading to a higher amount of sales at a lower revenue or you may just prefer to circulate this amongst magicians and if so I'd suggest a price tag no less than £5.00 since the majority of the public won't invest in many apps above the £2.99 mark!
I have a nice collection of magic apps (non of which I would use in a paid enviro) but anything you have to offer the magic world will be worthy of my investment! Best wishes Michael

I'm a professional magician, and I recently did a gig in which I used nothing but my iPhone.
It was a personal challenge, and I'm happy to report it went rather well. Of course, I very carefully selected effects that made it seem that the iPhone just happened to be a handy available prop.

I use my iphone in my professional close up performances. Now, in my case, I am not currently using an app; I'm using a video. However, I think the routine is very funny and entertaining and it does get good reactions.
And if people credit the iphone with the trick working, so be it. If they are entertained, that is what matters. I'll be interested to see your app, Angelo! Joe Libby San Antonio,TX

So I have an idea that may make it so that people would pay far more for it. The thought is, what if I pay for some secret code or something that allows me to temporarily use the 'magic' features of a free app for a few minutes. The free app could then be put on any ones phone, and only you would be able to do the effect with it.

Hi angelo, actually I have all iphone magic trick apps (only yours is missing) I wanted to start programming my owen tricks, my wife actually has a mac but I really have no time, working hard and performing!!!
the problem is of the good magic apps is: only professionell magicans (which can keep the secret) should use these apps, for instance iforce blowes all away (it's just the best of the best tricks) searching for doodle in itunes, nobody finds the trick, but googel for "doodle iphone trick" what already happed during my performance they find the app! the app should have a secret name and when you start the app no title should appear. I would pay max $5 for an app (if the trick is really good!) |

I agree the apps are worth much more and my latest magic app "MagicDraw" is $9.99 not just because it's a great effect, actually many effects but because I did not want a lot of people doing it however the price has not seemed to stop many from buying it because sales are very good! Pro's will pay for a good App and I too would have paid $20 for iForce!

CardOracle is around $65. Not a toy, designed for performance.
It was a choice not to sell it cheap. It's not a trick, it's a real routine.

Yes, but the App Store is not a magic shop. More like a department store. Would you buy a magic trick in a department store? |

This is a great discussion (I just purchased iforce and love it). Don't close up magicians want to perform effects with "everyday props"? Some regular old coins, a deck of cards.. The pubic isn't fooled with magic boxes, etc right? So now the iphone / itouch is a part of our everyday landscape. Sure we know what some of the features are. We also know that you can trick shuffle a deck of cards, second deal, etc. The value of a "trick" is that it fools you in spite of your familiarity with the props. Just having a portable phone means you can perform Nelms' "Call the Wizard" routine.. If these apps allow us to fool people, so be it! I'm not arguing for an "all iphone act", but it has a place in our current society so why not bring it into the act?
They will say, " it's all sleight of hand", "it's all technology", "he's doing something"... Ok. |

Before pricing Mental Killer I thought long and hard about what I was doing. In the end I felt that the quality of the final effect was well worth the asking price. This is an effect that you can comfortably perform in any paid performance and I do so on a regular basis. I feel what I am offering merits the price I am asking and I think those who purchase it will be very pleased they took the plunge.
Angelo, I think your app is going to be a hit as well and I think you should price it appropriately for the market you want to reach. Thank you in advance for the help with mine as well! All the best my friend, Max
