In a 1938 book by George Kaufman, John Mullholland claimed there were more than a million tricks available to a studious magician. I wonder what the count would be today! Let's see -- if I review 10 tricks a day for about 300 years I wouldn't even get to the new stuff.

In my opinion, you can't count the tricks. It's completely impossible. And it's not necessary.

What differentiates a trick from another: when is it a variant and when is it a new trick? Once you will have obtained a consensus on this, I'll be able to answer your question fairly fast... but I don't have to get to work immediately for you're not close to find properly accepted criteria...

Strictly speaking the trick is not the effect. The trick is the secret, more or less. It might not be easy but be easier to know the number of secrets that we know.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Once you knock off the clutter and chip away at the progresive coats of paint, if you know the old stuff, you won't be needing the new. That would be redundant.

It would be just as hard to count the number of tricks that have been invented over, and over again.

Wow, I can't even imagine taking the time to think about thinking about that. Seems frivolous at best to try... but then again

"frivolous" indeed is such a nice word: it's music to my ear. Magic is frivolous and this is one of the things that I love about it

There is one trick, the gift of wonder, bestowed on us by whatever deity or scientific paradigm you ascribe to:
"It is the birthright of every person to encounter the cosmos anew in every culture in every age. When this happens to us, we experience a deep sense of wonder. The most fortunate among us are guided by teachers who channel this exhilaration. We are born to delight in the world; we are taught to distinguish our preconceptions from the truth. Then, new worlds are discovered as we decipher the mysteries of the cosmos." - Carl Sagan Every trick is a reverberation of this innate impulse

Aaah... It's about how many tricks exist. Another good question would be "how many tricks are in your performing repertoire" ?
