I was wondering what anyone thought of the new G5.

I'll be gettin' one sooner or later! It drives me crazy that the newest fastest Mac is less expensive than the PowerMac and G4 that I've bought in the past! But that's a good thing!
I must admit though, I absolutely HATE osX. It stinks. When you are opening files you can't view by date. Who came up with this? You would think that this is pretty basic. If you know of something that I am missing let me know. to Matt - are you a Pixies fan? |

Your the first person on the Café to notice the pixies reference.
I just saw Un Chien Andalou for the first time last year (the film that inspired debaser) I just bought the g5 last night by the way so we'll see. Matt |

I'm slobbering over the G5, but it will be sometime before I can afford to buy one.
Did you hear about the slip-up four days before the big unveiling? On the Thursday prior to the G5's release, the specs were inadvertenly posted on Apple's website. There was even one site (the very next day!) selling shirts, jerseys, baby dolls and tank tops with the specifications on them, and you could have them shipped to you in time to wear to the unveiling of the G5! |

I don't understand your comment about OSX not being able to open by date. When I open any folder I am able to see the size and date modified in the window. To set it, open your hard drive icon, switch to List view, then go to the View menu of the Finder and go to Show View options. There you can set what you want to show for that window or all windows. I use OS 10.2 by the way. Hope this helps, landmark

Hi Landmark,
I'm talking about the open and save dialog boxes within a program. I work on so many different files that I sometimes forget what I named them. In os9 when I wanted to open a file in, let's say Photoshop, I could see the files to choose from in a folder listed by date. That way I didn't have to remember the name of a file I just opened the latest one. does this make sense? |

Gotcha now. Yes, that's a pretty annoying feature not to have if you need it. There's a shareware program Default Folder X that extends the capability of the open/save dialog, but I believe even that program does not allow you yet to sort by date modified. Some of the more heavy duty programs, though, like Word, and if I remember correctly, Photoshop, have a menu of "Opened Recently" that list the last half dozen or so items you've worked on. Personally, though I find OSX slower than OS 9, and missing some important features (like the Apple menu) I like it better than OS 9. I find it is much more stable, very rarely crashing, and my internet connection seems to work a lot better. But that's just my Mac. I realize that different configurations are going to have different outcomes. landmark

My 400mhz G4 is being retired (actually give to my niece, ahhh raising yet another generation of Mac Addicts) for a new G5. I'm just glad I held off on updating till now! It will also be my introduction to OSX, since us graphic folks are the last of the holdouts. I'm a little apprehensive, but hopefull. Thankfully, as Landmark mentioned, there's shareware to bring to OSX most of the features you grew to love in OS9. Plus, I'll be able to play Unreal Tourney 2003!
