I know there's gonna be a bunch of you interested in this. Don't think it's been made before but I could be wrong.

Wow! I thought I was defiantly going to buy two when I saw this link!

Until I noticed that it is the same price as both Volume 1 & Volume 2 of the Books of Wonder, together!

Yeah, it is quite pricey. But knowing how cool it is & how difficult it would be to make well I think it's a fair amount.

It certainly is 'cool' but only as difficult to make as the tools you own.

So if you are like me and don't particularly enjoy DIY and its details, then you may not be equipped enough.

But (other than drying time) my very good engineer friend made one up for me and he said it only took him maybe half an hour. And that was from Mr Wonders destructions in the book.

Thanx for the link though, looks like a beautiful box, and exactly as Mr Wonder designed it.

Presumably this vendor has purchased the rights to manufacture this product from Tommy's brother Frank? I hope so but somehow doubt it!

Hocus-Pocus web site is selling Tommy Wonders Diminishing Cards. Their ad says that Tommy Wonder's sister is making and supplying the item to them.

Does make one wonder that the family would put out the Diminishing Cards and not the Card in Ring Box effect.

I don't mind the price, what I do mind is the ad says they have made it out of veneer. This means they made it with junk wood, then covered it with thin wood veneer material. Why go to all that trouble with such a small box item? The cost of using good wood to begin with could not be that much of a difference in price.

I once contacted Tommy Wonder after purchasing his books and found out that he sells several of his items at lectures. His prices were sky high, so this is a lot cheaper then he would have sold it for from him, if he were still alive.

That box cost $78.2541 on an exchange conversion site. So of course there would be addtional cost from the bank for conversion. If the box is superior, I would not say $90 or $100 for the box is out of line in todays market.

It might be veneer on plywood, which is actually a good choice. Some solid woods will warp and/or crack with time, especially in humid climates. A good plywood substrate for a quality veneer is all right, in that it avoids the problems of warpage. If it's veneer on MDF (sawdust, formed and compressed with formaldehyde glue) I would not even consider buying it. You'll probably have to ask to find out.

The Diminishing Cards sound wonderful!!! I may have to break my budget and buy them.

Veneer is merely thin wood. These thin woods are often made from expenside woods to conserve costs. Usually the veneer will be glued to a less expensive wood (not necessarily plywood nor mdf). The less expensive wood might be a knot free wood such as yellow poplar.

In the case of the ring box in question, it would have been constructed of two or more layers of the quality veneer wood. This, in effect, would create a thin plywood of all quality wood. Read the description in The Books of Wonder. A thin durable wooden box was required and laminated veneer would be a perfect solution.

Making this box according to the original design is quite a challenge to do correctly. The beveled top pieces have to be cut on a compound miter angle to fit. And a piece this small requires precise work as every mistake will show. I've seen several attempts that were less than 100% successful.

I do have a supply of boxes that can be used for this routine, the only difference being that hinges are brass, not cloth like the original Tommy Wonder box. These boxes are from domestic or exotic hardwoods, with ebony front button, and are extremely well executed.

Tabby is a supplier of these, (Tommy Wonder used to send people to Tabby) perhaps you should wait till he is well again before you post any more adverts for this? I think it looks bad on you and you are probably a very nice guy...

The least you could do is to introduce yourself in the appropriate place, for a 3 post count member all of your 3 posts are adverts.

The tommy wonder box on emagictricks,is constructed as per tommy wonders instructions in the books of wonder, which means it's made from veneer, and not veneer and ply wood or anything else for that matter,
I own one of these box's and they are near as dam it made exactly as described in the book

Hi all,
I have made this ring box to Tommy Wonders specifications. Not too bad to do, I used 2 mm plywood and cut it with a Swan and Morton scalpel. To glue it together I used contact glue. You make the complete box without the top piece, you then cut of the top using the scalpel and I use the wood strips you can purchase for picture frames, I think it was 5mm, again cut the mitres with the scalpel. The hinges are brass and was purchased from a Dolls house retailer.
Like Tommy if you determined enough to create this great effect you CAN do it.
The biggest challenge was being able to do the card fold into eighths with Bicycles which I think we are tougher than Tommy used and he either had big hands or used bridge sized cards. You really do need to buy 60 to 70 decks of cards to get the fold right, I purchased a load of ex casino cards at a knock down price. When ever my card get old now they get the Tommy Wonder 2 second card fold treatment.
This is the best effect I do and if you build the suspense with all of the theatrical nuances Tommy wrote about, it really blows people away. Great piece of magical art that we can all learn from and apply the principles to other effects
To my mind Tommy Wonder is the greatest magician that has ever graced this earth who truly understood how to play the spectators minds.
Bit long sorry, but very passionate about his work.
Oh and the box has been used regularly for the last five years, still good.
Mike.

Hi Mike:

I have both the Tommy Wonder DVD and the Visions of Wonder, and I am amazed with the effect using the ring box.
I am looking for some one who could help me construct the ring box as per Tommy Wonder specs

Will you be able to help me on this? If you could, pls feel free to send me a quotation, as well as your email address.

Thank you

Sorry mate,

I don't get flagged anywhere when a message is put on here. I would love to help you but, I wouldn't do this in respect to Tommy's estate.

Honestly have a go, you can do itfrom the books. I am not very special at all.

Mike.
