Hey everyone,
I wanted to post a video in this section of the Café for beginners, novices, etc to see how powerful a sponge ball routine really is for real people. I get the feeling that a lot of today's aspiring magicians are shying away from sponges for fear of looking silly or not being taken seriously. Besides having a powerful effect on lay people when performed correctly, learning sponge balls teaches many of the fundamentals of performing magic - the sleight of hand and the principles of direction (note: not misdirection), timing, rhythm, and routining. http://vimeo.com/13603975 By the way, this performance was from the mealtime teaser for an orientation evening show performance. For those of you unfamiliar with the college market, it is common for magicians to be booked to do a teaser during lunch or dinner the day of their evening stage show in order to go table to table and rouse up interest in that evening's performance, to get more people out to the show. Enjoy! Brian |

learning sponge balls teaches many of the fundamentals of performing magic - the sleight of hand and the principles of direction (note: not misdirection), timing, rhythm, and routining. Something that is lost among many new and intermediate magicians - fortunately they all come to realize this down the road and then their magic is renewed and appreciated all over again hence why the classics of magic are classics. Thanks Brian for putting it out there - it can never get old. |

Ya know, Brian...that's inspiring enough for me to get a new set. I haven't done the sponge balls in I don't know how many years...and, I agree...great performing style, by the way.
That's VERY much appreciated by me! Doug |

Just recently picked up 4 sponge balls and the Encyclopaedia of Sponge Ball Magic with Ben Salinas DVD. It's fantastic.
Great to see the general public are still interested in the old classics. I loved your performance. Simple, yet effective. Great stuff! |

Nice routine Brian. Well done! I just love those sponge balls. The two DVD's that I've used and found very helpful are The World's Greatest Magic -- Sponge Balls and Steve Dacri's Sponge Ball Toolbox. The Toolbox is great for building your skills and provides a wide range of methods to meet individual and situational requirements. The World's Greatest Magic DVD demonstrates 13 different routines from some of the best in the business that can be adapted to one's own style or used as is. My favorite is Eugene's Burger's routine with the killer ending!

Thanks for the compliments on the performing style guys. That style has been a conscious effort for the better part of the last two years. It was easy to do with some routines, hard with others. The trick was figuring out how to make the style effect-indifferent, and be able to just play the character. I seem to have finally figured it out, and can transfer close-up to stage seamlessly with that character now.
Anyway, glad I've sparked some interest in the sponges again. Let's keep spreading the word! |
