Today it was declared legal to do to any phone in the US. Looks like a lot more opportunities and capabilities opened up for lphone users.

Today the courts ruled that jail breaking your iPhone is legal.... in a related story, nobody noticed.
This is a matter of the courts, rather late, making a ruling that society had already made for them.

Jail breaking is breaking the lock that Apple has on software such that you can download from sites other then that officially blessed by Pope Jobs the First.
(With apologies and no offence intended to any practicing catholics.)

No offense taken.
A worker at Apple Computer brings a friend to the Caféteria for lunch. While there, chatting. The friend notices that someone has walked in that everyone is making a fuss over. He asks his friend the worker; "Is that Steve Jobs?" The friend looks over quickly and says; "No, that's God. He just THINKS he's Steve Jobs!"

Jobs is a trip, Woz more so, except for the bow tie..... Apple lost this battle before when they tried to keep other companies from making anything that worked with a Mac.

Okay, I'm not an iPhoner, so some naive questions:
1) I assume Apple still has the right to void the warranty if the phone is jailbroken? 2)And does Apple have the right to download firmware to a user's phone that disables a jailbroken phone?

1) Yes, they can void the warranty. Mine has been jailbroken from day one and I have never had any issues. 2) Yes, each new software update USUALLY has something in it to help curb hacking. Within days of each new update, a new hack surfaces. Sometimes the new hacks also include a way to install the new update without even using itunes. You can simply go into your phone and add the new update there. Jailbreaking does allow one to use non 'approved' apps. BUT it also allows you to use the phone to its full potential. The 3G is able to shoot video, but Apple did not unlock that. Jailbreaking it allows you now shoot video. There are several other very useful things I use my phone for that either Apple didn't want me using it for or just never thought of themselves. Kevin

Jailbreaking it allows you now shoot video. There are several other very useful things I use my phone for that either Apple didn't want me using it for or just never thought of themselves. Sometimes its not Apple directly but the phone companies. For instance, when initially released many smart phones with bluetooth had the capacity to serve as a net hub for a bluetooth enabled laptop, but it was disabled because the phone company didn't want you using your laptop on your phone plan. Instead they wanted to sell you a separate added cost plan for the laptop. Jail breaking your iPhone or iPad (my iPad is jail broken) does mean you need to be careful what you install as no one is playing big-brother watching for malware, but it also means you aren't held hostage to Jobs arbitrary and changing app rules that basically forbid anything he thinks might compete with Apple in any way.

On 2010-07-26 20:30, Cyberqat No I can't be bothered, I'm not interested in Iphone apps, as I don't even have an Iphone -I'm not an AT&T customer. (And now I don't need to be) but you seem to already know that what I'm saying is true, seeing as you were able to name a company that is doing just this. Right off the top off the top of your head as well...

Yes they are.
They were before this ruling. They are after too. The ruling made no change. And that is my point. We sometimes forget that the law only exists because of community consent. When the bulk of the community dissent with a law and are willing to flaunt that disagreement, the law becomes meaningless. This is the essence of non-violent resistance.

A major thing that does change is the ability for consumers to use, previously "proprietary" systems, like the Iphone, with other service providers. That's big.
The 3rd party apps development is now mainstream, not marginalized, and will blossom into maturity, and profitability as never before.

I recently read that Verizon may be selling the iphone this Christmas for January delivery. Anyone else hear this? With even more people using this phone on Verizon's network, there would be less jailbreaking over to alternate service providers. But there will be many more customers jailbreaking to gain control of their phones and it's apps. Apple may have little choice but to open their platform to outside content sooner than later; their audience will soon double and we (the market) will demand it.
