In our province, the only libraries that hire entertainment are in our capital city of Winnipeg. There are 20 libraries with the entertainment organized by one central person. So...an entertainer's mailing campaign here in the province of Manitoba will consist of 1 letter.
The budgets are also low and the audience is usually limited to 20-30 kids due to fire codes. Certainly not a career maker. The good news is that when you're in, you're in. I started performing for the libraries when I was 11 years old and gave them up just this year. I still have a love for library shows (about the best audiences around) but I needed to move onto new opportunities. |

Those ain't all libraries, and most of those aren't in Manchester. Some of the ones you listed are mobile libraries on a bus. There are hospital libraries and University libraries listed on their as well.
I know my library system and there are 3 circuits that are approachable. These are Oldham, Manchester and Stockport. They cover all the public libraries around my home and there are 9 Oldham branches, about 8 Stockport ones and 16 Manchester Ones. All the entertainment is ran by a head office event organiser. No library books you themselves. They are hired by the head-manager event coordinator who overseas all the libraries in their area. That means there are 3 people I need to reach to get into the system. But 2 of them are very, very difficult to get in touch with. 1 of them has never booked anybody ever. Another has booked animal groups and such, but only pays £50 per show max. The third was the one that booked me for the 9 shows and paid £85 per show. So I know the market, its just a lot of work for not a lot of money. Steve |

Just wondering...How is the pay for library shows in the US? With all of the budget cuts, I would be surprised if they could pay anything at all.

The economy is tricky for us, it absolutely effects us, but on the other hand a lot more people are using libraries now that they don't have as much money as they used to. I've been shows for $300 and $275, a few places said they were on a tight budget and that didn't bother me; even they were able to pay $200.

Ken,
Yes to both of the first 2 statements. I performed around 70ish shows this summer and that was with a full week off. I think last summer I was well over 100 shows but that is a CRAZY schedule! I'll echo everything Ken said for reason's to do library shows. And the good thing about libraries is that most of them will keep having you back year after year if you have a good quality show that fits the theme and is at least partly different. I am already about 95% booked up for next summer so that helps with the marketing costs! PM for any more details you may have questions about! Chad |

What do you guys use for your marketing? Letter followed by two postcards? Or something else? Thanks.
Jim
