(..which is the English Premier League incidentally)
After an underwhelming World Cup, and the start of the phoney war that is pre-season friendlies and charity shield, what are the chances of the hyped stars who had bad experiences in South Africa shining again when back in their natural habitat? Or are there going to be some other, perhaps better players who succeed them this year? Of the very biggest pre-World Cup hyp-ees, Rooney looked unfit at the WC and as if he was single handedly bearing the weight of his coutry (and Nike's) expectations; Gerrard proved again that he is the world's best exponent of playing as the big lad in the school playground, rushing around wherever the ball is and smacking in goals, but without an ounce of understanding that he is playing in a team that is trying to play a system; Torres just didn't look unfit, he looked actually ill; and so on. Of course, all this is known...but once the EPL starts up again, will these same stars dominate the league? Or have we seen through their reputations? If Rooney has to adjust to not perhaps having the potential to be the next Pele, Gerrard is a headless chicken who is also now getting on a a bit, and Torres has been revealed as being a liability if his pace is curtailed, who will be the top players this year if we ignore the WC flops? Javier Hernadez at Man U seems to be the next to get the big buildup, and could do well. Arteta at Everton has the talent to be a really big star. Chamakh at Arsenal? One (or several) of the assortment of circus stars being shoehorned into the Man City dressing room? Or will be just be treated to a rehash of the hype for the same old players? Who should I be watching out for? |

Chelsea, Utd, Arsenal, though not necessarily in that order.
City, Spurs and Liverpool fighting it out for 4th. Same players playing magnificently against opposition that are hopelessly outfinanced and therefore outclassed.

I've placed a small wager on Nottingham Forest (You Reds) joining the big guns again next season.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Arsenal will come of age this season and hopefully prove that total football can succeed. Utd second,Chelsea third,Liverpool fourth. City won't prosper until Mancini is sacked early next year, after wallowing around the 7th/8th place till then. Oh,and Rooney will break the crossbar, with a backward header from the halfway line,on 39 minutes against Eastwood Town in the 3rd round of the FA cup. It will be at Coronation park....And I'll be there! Is that succinct enough? Cheers,Ray.
