I have a contact in the school system who recently gave me a listing of every school principal in their district, along with email addresses.
Using e-mail for lead generation would be very cost effective as opposed to mailing out sales letter via snail mail. However, I certainly don't want to get a bunch of spam complaints. Does anybody have any input on this?

Not sure you'd legally be allowed to email them bulk like that, due to CAN-SPAM laws.

It might be worth your while to call each school, 1 by 1, before you sent the email, letting them know that you intend to email the Principal. Even talking to the secretary may be enough. If they decline, then don't send it.
Then send them 1 by 1, instead of as a blast. That's what I would do. - Donald

Obviously calling first would be ideal, but not really feasible. This list is over 1500 names. With the amount of time it would take me to call everyone, it would just be more cost effective to do a traditional mailing campaign.
Yes Scott, I was concerned about CAN-SPAM. Sadly, I guess my idea isn't really feasible.

Not on topic at all but WOW that's a lot of principals for one school district.

Yes, that's not right. Perhaps every administrator and teacher in a big district.

Not necessarily. Some districts are big. Specifically, Chicago's Public School district (note: this is ONE district) is the 3rd largest in the country with over 407,000 students and second largest employer with 43,000+ employees.
And I think 675 actual schools. If the list includes principals and vice-principals, that's 1350 right there, plus any schools that have two vice-principals, that bumps the number even higher. |

I think email is not as strong as a phone call and a phone call is not as strong as showing up in person. I was able to secure some school show by walking in and out of schools with a trick in my pocket and a flyer. However emails have worked for me before.

Actually the Can-Spam act is on your side. It says you don't have to get permission to send a marketing message to a computer. I'm not a lawer. Better check with one.

That's still not 1500 and it also not just Principals as he indicated. I'm well aware of the Chicago and surrounding area school systems (as well as most other parts of the country) and this still seems very unlikely.

Not sure why the big debate over the source of the numbers. I suppose the list could be from multiple districts, although they seem to mostly have similar e-mail addresses. And yes, I estimated the number. Upon further review, it seems to actually be 1469 contacts.
There, the big mystery is solved.

Amen. I was wondering why the doubt myself. Now let's get back to finding a good solution instead of being distracted on a moot point!
One solution: maybe just doing a rolling call list. Another solution: possibly get them to help sell you. Do like the college block bookings..... If you do one show, it's $1,000. Do three schools in one local within 5 days and all three get a discount, say $850. 5 bookings in 7 days gets another discount, say $750. This gives them the incentive to help spread the word about you. And word spreads fast among teachers... for better or for worse! |

Sorry Brent I wasn't trying to start any controversy. It's just that here in NJ the school systems are very messed up. We have only 21 counties yet we have over 600 school districts and some of those districts have no schools believe it or not. Of course each district also has it's own staff( yes even the one's without any schools) so that's why I made my comment. I wasn't trying to doubt you it just amazed me. That's one of the main reasons our property taxes are so high in NJ.

The Can-Spam act is there to protect legitimate marketers. It has more to do with sending misleading promos and unsolicited porn.
The risk you run with a list you haven't developed on your own however, is "complaints" from the recipients. Too many complaints and your e-mail service won't deliver your messages ... I would try a test mailing to a sample percentage and see what kind of response you get. Oscar |
