Hi guys not sure this is the right forum for this but I recently saw someone use a muscle pass and it sparked me to try want to try it. I have the basics already down but I can't seem to get the coin as much as out of my hand I'm trying to muscle pass it from. it will pop up but go no further. Smile

I was hoping somebody might be able to give me some useful pointers. I know that it takes a lot of practice but was wondering if maybe anyone had any pointers that could be useful.

thanks,
-kyle

Play with the specific position in your hand and try different sized coins.

Trying different sized coins is essential - At least it was for me!

One thing I found is that it was counter productive to try to practice too much each day - I'm not fully satisfied with mine yte but trying to practice it more than 15-20 times per day just hurts. Smile

Just another point I forgot to mention which just occurred to me whilst I was practising my muscle pass - It's not a bad idea to practice using coins that don't have milled edges and also are not too thin. If you have small hands the thickness bit might be difficult to accommodate (Though not necessarily), but using coins with smooth edges greatly increases the amount of time I'm able to practice the move.

What kind of coins would you recommend with smooth edges?

I know nickles but those are entirely too small

Depending on the size you want there are a few - Old English pennies don't have milled edges but they're quite thin so I suspect they would dig into the palm more. As yet I can only do a muscle pass with dollar sized coins so on that note there are a number of old Chinese coins that work. Check Ebay for Chinese coins of the correct size, I'm afraid I don't know their denominations but the majority of listings give a size for the coin in question and most are not milled. There are a lot of Chinese coins listed on the Ebay UK that were of sizes that I disregarded but if you were to look through for one similar in size to a coin you're comfortable with and check with the seller to see if it's milled that should work.

Alternatively have a look at various magic dealers online - Most of their "Chinese" coins do not have milled edges and because they're made specifically for magic you can get them in dollar and half dollar sizes. These are usually quite light, which is beneficial to practising the muscle pass, and again do check with the vendor before buying to make sure the edges are smooth and that the coins are not the extra thin versions.

Finally you can always use old, worn coins like Franklin or Liberty half dollars/Morgan or Peace dollars as although these coins are all milled they tend to have worn down quite a bit so wont be as uncomfortable. Beware that old coins that are not made of silver/gold will not usually be quite so worn so the milled edges might still be "sharp".

Hope that helps.

Hi Kyle,

The muscle pass...Smile

In order to get you feeling good about the distance you're getting, practice with a very light coin. I actually recommend a clay poker chip. It's about the size of a Morgan dollar but much lighter. Practice for a long time with this then switch to whatever coin you want. Smaller coins are hard to muscle palm if you start out with large coins though! I started muscle palming with quarters. Now, I do it with silver dollars. It took a long time.

I'm actually starting to get really good with quarters and its only been a few days I hope to move on up to halves soon and give myself a bit of a challenge

Take a look at Brian Platt's ROV Tumbling Muscle Click Pass video available at http://www.plattmagic.com . The title is quite a mouthful but it's actually very simple and well taught by Brian. He goes over how he always had difficulty with the muscle pass until he learned a few small adjustments that made it much easier to learn.

I use it but mainly just for lateral passes - side to side. Much easier to muscle pass across from hand to hand than to make the coin go up 18 to 24"! Besides passing laterally allows a whole lot of effects to get easier; the upward pass is a one-trick very obvious pony IMO.

Thank you.

I hold coins in classic palm to work the hand muscles. A strong hand is essential to the muscle pass. You can't muscle pass if your hand is like play doh.
