I thought that it was a fun video from Sweden, but apperantly some saw a political message in it.

Perhaps if the video had some Swedish sweaties (females) dancing there would be no political message read into it.

Sweaties or sweeties? Or are you talking about that guy that died in the sauna competition?

OH yea
Now that I take a good look at my spelling it really is pathetic. A sweetie is nothing like a sweatie. LOL

According to sociologists, the more someone tries to convince others of their views, the weaker those views are and the more they are really trying to convince themselves.

Which explains a lot about both the religious right and the strident left.

How about the religious left and the strident right?

What thread are we in, anyway?

Universally, or just on average?

Sociologists are, by the way, a funny bunch.

Lol Sociology is, by definition, about statistical averages.

However, whenever someone gets emotionally charged up about something, its always worth asking "whats the real, underlying issue here?" "What is this person really tryign to defend or accomplish."

Additionally, one of the strongest reactions in the human animal is fear, so when you see really strong emotional responses to something its a pretty good bet its being driven by a fear.

That fear can often be the fear of being wrong, because too many people's parents made too big a deal about "being right." But there are other fears that can raise their ugly heads as well.

Its amazing how much of adult human experience is driven by what we learn as a child. Most people's conception of God is heavily based in either (a) a bigger more powerful version of their parents or (b) what they wish their parents had been.

So does America, but that doesn't stop you right wing nutjobs from spouting off every other day...

It speaks volumes about your own politics that I come of as a "right wing nutjob" to you. I'm a registered independent who voted for Clinton twice. I'm pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, vegan, and I do extensive pro bono legal work at inner city clinics for an immigration clinic and a disability rights center for low-moderate income people.

Although, despite your accusations, I have never called you a socialist, I can certainly see how someone might; when moderates come off as right wing nutjobs, it's time to do a status check of your own. My conservative friends would be quite amused at this characterization.

When a simple desire to see existing, well-established federal law enforced gets a person labeled a nutjob, the barometer reading is clear. You're the nutjob on the wing.

Then all you have to do in order to stop the confusion is to stop acting like one. In a perfectly harmless thread that has nothing to do with imigration, you are the one who comes out with a snark about trading citizenship. Like, "Well, if you like it so much over there, then why don't you try to imigrate?", etc. And that snark was what I was responding to. It doesn't matter what your politics are, it matters how you treat people. The words you use matter even more.

Like the thread, my comment was "perfectly harmless." To the extent that it caused confusion, I'm pretty sure that's more about you.

I agree, not only with respect to the patterns and fears that you're describing, but also with respect to the general philosophical framework that underlies the way we filter our experiences and new knowledge. Recognizing this doesn't solve it, per se, but given that we all have philosophical and psychological imports, it can be very helpful to at least try to be aware of them and meta-think accordingly.
