John G,
I am SO excited that you are the guest of honor this week. I was introduced to your work a few years ago, and I am a huge fan. I use more of your routines in my performing repertoire than my own work. I am thrilled to finally get to pick your brain! Thank you so much! I know this question always gets asked, but you are my hero so I've gotta know... What specific effects do you use in your day to day work? Do you use the classics, or do you just use your material? Thanks John! |

Thanks, Aaron!
When I work, I'm naturally inclined to perform my own effects for the most part. It's less of an ego thing, but more of an AUTHENTIC thing. It's important to perform effects that feel like "me." Whether they are entirely unique, or just my unique take on a classic, effects in my repertoire fit a number of criteria (impact, audience connection, graceful handling, viewable, angle-proof...). Some of my STROLLING favorites (in no particular order): - Crazy Man's Handcuffs - Invisible Deck - Coin flurry with a casino chip and deck production - Truth In Advertising - Biddleless - Triumph (version from One Degree is my current favorite) - Lost & Found - Palm Reader Plus - Intro-verted - Homage to Homing For formal close-up sets: - Full Circle - Egypt (an original based on Phil Goldstein's Drawing Conclusions) - Color Blind, Intuition and Out of the Blue - Lost & Found - Detour - Gemini Prediction or Vino Aces As you can see, I'm not a Cups & Balls or Linking Rings type of guy. I lean towards cards, but focus on the EXPERIENCE, not that I'm just using cards. I share more in the book about my repertoire, how I remember all this stuff, alternative choices, etc. Good question! Awesome! Thank you so much for the info John. I always find it fascinating to learn what others use "In the Trenches". I use so much of your material it is scary. And after I buy your book, I'm sure I'll add more to my repertoire. Just for fun, I currently use...
Strolling 1. Troubleshooter & Optical Opener for Opening routines (Whoever thinks that card tricks should never be used as openers should see either of these two routines). 2. Color Blind & Palm Reader 3. Tidal Wave Aces for my closer 4. Constellation when I hand out my business card (The best effect on the planet for handing out a business card) 5. Here, There, & Everywhere (My absolute favorite handling of this plot) 6. Googly Eyes & Turning the Tables 7. Stress Test 8. Quick Draw 9. Tricycle Cards (Second best packet trick ever created IMHO) 10. Tailspin 11. Intuition & Out of the Blue (Best packet trick ever created IMHO) Wow... It really is scary how much of your material I use! Thank you again for the info, I'm going to think of some really good questions to ask you.. |

Yes, this is scary. Do I need a restraining order?
I'm so jazzed how much material from the Second Storm DVDs you have listed. I get the impression that a lot of those effects have ridden under the radar, so thanks for mentioning them. I just showed Josh Jay Tricycle Cards the other night - complete with the cool switch wallet. I've been carrying it with me every since. Here, There, Everywhere is a great trick. If there's a table around, I inevitably do it. I like how you listed choices for your opener (Optical or Troubleshooter). Both make outstanding openers. FYI - In my Second Storm lecture notes, I have an IMPROMPTU version of Troubleshooter that I call Double Trouble. It's now my version of choice. Thanks again, Aaron "the stalker" Smith John G

Hahahaha... thanks for the new nickname, I'll be sure to add that to my business card. It has a nice ring to it...
Portland Magician Aaron "The Stalker" Smith Available for Birthday Parties :) It is really hard for me to imagine that the effects from Second Storm have ridden under the radar. Those routines are so good, and for those folks who are reading this who have not bought the Second Storm DVD'S do yourself a favor and go buy them immediately! I also use the handling of Troubleshooter from Second Storm, it kills em every time! |

Count me as another fan of Second Storm. The percentage of performable material is staggering.
And most of it is fun to watch even after repeat viewings, which makes it a great value among magic videos (even in the L&L catalog). |

I also love Optical Opener, because its such a strong effect for laymen!
I played with it and scripted a pseudo hypnosis plot around it. My changes were that I was able to name the freely choosen card before I do the reverse fan and as a final kicker - the blank card at the end has a odd back (fits nicely in my patter about why they have choosen this card in hypnosis trance...) If you want to hear about my way doing Optical Opener send me a PM for more details. Tailspin is one of my alltime fav. card effects and the reactions when the aces change back into the original 4 of kind in their hands is just incredible. They don´t expect this at all! Sorry for hijacking this thread. Greetings from Germany Jerry |

I just learned Intuition and Out of the Blue, I really like it. I haven't put it into my repertoire. I tend to perform it for the boys mostly. How is your experience with it with the laymen?
I haven't figured out a presentation for it for laymen. Thanks for sharing John. Best, Sean |

Hey Sean,
I have a formal close-up act with a premise about traveling. I have five postcards from different places and do a trick at each stop. I do Intuition and Out of the Blue on the "Vegas" stop. The postcard is actually from the Four Queens Casino. I remove the Queens, produce the Aces to form four blackjacks; and proceed with the rest of the effect as I talk about lady luck, etc. I also use Golden Nugget backs for the transformations. Not only does this make the changes even more amazing, it fits with the presentation (in fact, the Golden Nugget is right next door to the Four Queens). So, beyond the cool moves, the cards help transport the audience so they feel like they are there. I don't do the effect during strolling situations. I reserve it for more formal situations with captive audiences. Great thing for your to bring up. It reminds us all that the 1) audience and 2) setting are always important parts of the equation. Tricks alone don't always deliver otherwise. John G

That is really a cool premise, John. I really like the idea of the postcards and traveling. Thank you for sharing that!

John G,
would you use the same routines for a magic castle gig in the close up room? Ed |

Fantastic response! and what a great presentation too! Thanks John! That makes so much sense and really puts this effect in a great context! I was trying to think how I might do this in a informal situation and I think you are right about not doing it in a strolling atmosphere. You really want people paying close attention when you do this routine. Thanks again John.
