It took me a while to get to this section of the Cafe, so I thought I’d make my responses in a single post.
Yes, I do gospel magic. Most of you might think it strange that someone claiming to be an escape artist would do gospel magic. Well, I have different stage personas to fit the different characters I portray. I would say my experiences in gospel magic are, well, unique. There was a post asking if anyone ever came across anyone claiming the magician was of the devil. I was married to someone like that. He forbade me to do any type of magic, including the gospel magic while we were married...he’s now my ex, but we won’t go there! Then, I had been asked by the pastor of my church to teach the children some Bible lessons. I asked if I could include magic, and the pastor eagerly approved. The kids and adults who saw the lessons absolutely loved it! Well, I was telling my grandmother about it, and she simply could not believe that a church would allow someone to do magic within its walls! I had to spend 45 minute explaining to her that I was not a devil worshipper. I’m not sure if I ever really convinced her. I even showed her the secrets to one of the tricks I did. I have done many shows for my church, and will continue for as long as they will let me. Oh, and thanks Steve for the Soldier’s Playing Cards. I have been trying to find that for over a year, and no one around here knew of it. Sorry, I’ve taken up so much space! Margarette
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

It's a nice surprise to hear that Margarette is a gospel magician too.
About 20 years ago (when I was 20), I performed gospel magic while teaching a Sunday school class for High Schoolers. They seemed to like it and so did the rest of the church. Then Felix Snipes came to the church and performed his stage show gospel act and was very well received. He is the person who introduced me to the international Fellowship of Christian Magicians. Naturally I joined and found many magicians who were members. It's a large group with members in over 25 countries. Because of the FCM I've been in email communication with escapists like Peter McCahon in England, and Ron London in the USA. So my interests grew away from performing "magic" to learning escapes. Long story short, my focus is using escapes to present Biblical truths. Of course I also perform them in non-church venues too, and just use different patter. If you want to know more about the FCM, or would like to find a chapter close to where you live, go to http://www.fcm.org Joe Marotta |

This morning I received an e-mail about the Magic Cafe, and thanks for pointing me to it.
I am retired, and spend a lot of time on the computer, in different forums. Since the 60’s, I have been doing gospel magic full time after selling my large show, I began to do gospel magic. I found out about the FCM in the beginning of it and joined it in 1954, and carry card No. 36. I have always loved to correspond with other magicians, and have helped them with a lot of their patter over the years. I have noticed several of the posters, who are friends of mine, and have loved to read their posts. I have just sent a lengthy article on Doves, to Magic-Illusion, as I raised my own doves for years, and had done dove magic, in my shows. Glad to see this site Steve, you all are doing a great job. I have been in magic, for 60 years, and now that I’ve come to retirement and don’t perform many large shows, I still write, and develop patter, for the various tricks on the market. Charles Cagle |

Thanks Margarette!
I don’t do classic Gospel Magic, but I do a lot of Fire and Torn and restored everythings and Escapes! I do Extreme Street Evangelism which unlike "Gospel Magic" doesn’t have a Scripture or Bibical Lesson attached to every effect because many of the effects I do are done to attract attention so that I can go on with a Biblical/Book and Verse or Life Lesson. And although I have been invited to do some Churches, I don’t do them - because there are so many good Magicians like yourself who perform so much better for the Classic Gospel audience. I think what you (and the others) do is great! And frankly I am not as gifted in a structured performance area. I do however make it very clear to my audiences that I don’t do "Magic", I reinforce that what I do are tricks and illusions and knowing that, if they watch close enough - they should be able to catch me on every turn. Hey, thanks for sharing here. I am greatly encouraged that there are other Christian Magicians who do Escapes as well. God Bless!
