Greetings and Salutations,
No, no one here is going. They're all staying home. Stay away from Lawrence, KS. It's radioactive! Don't you remember the movie, "The Day After!" They really nuked Lawrence. OK! OK! OK! Radioactivity be ***ed, I'm going. Last year several guys from the KC area IBM and SAM clubs went. Don't know who will be going this year. I know of a couple of guys on the renfest circuit who were considering making the trip but it's been months since I've talked to them. I'll be out both Friday evening/night and all-day Saturday. I had a great time last year, and learned a lot. Planning on putting that new info into practice this weekend. I'll be the guy doing the cups and balls. No, not that guy -- the other guy. No, not him, either, the other guy! LOL! See you on the streets. Joe Zeman aka The Mage Ulysses |

Greetings and Salutations,
Started three shows Friday night, two got rained out before getting started and the third one got interrupted by rain at the hat. Saturday was great. Hot, but great. I was working the west side of Mass. Street, in the alcove opening of a vacant store. Had a nice awning and a couple of trees that kept my crowds and me out of the sun. I saw TeacherSears there, but I ended up splitting my time on that particular pitch with a magi from KC and his family of little mages. I talked to a Japanese top spinner from St. Louis who was at the Fest for the first time. He was working the east side of the street and had to give it up by mid-afternoon because of the heat and the sun. According to the Festival operator, they estimated about 15,000, most of those probably on Saturday. The crowds were good, and generous with their praise and tips. I have to work on the logistics of shifting pitches. The east side of Mass. is definitely the busiest, but it's the hottest, as my new Japanese friend found out, so the key is working east in the morning, west in the heat of the day, and moving back across the street once the sun ducks behind the west-side buildings. My apologies to those I didn't get a chance to introduce myself to, but I was busy trying to put on shows and GTFM! I had a great time and will definitely be heading back next summer. I think that I saw you but you were very busy so I didn’t bug you! I only went as a spectator, perhaps next year I will perform. Sunday was my favorite day, I only saw four acts but it was great, in the shade with lawn chairs! Over all it was a ton of fun but way to hot. |

Greetings and Salutations Mysterious,
If you saw a large guy not dressed in orange working solo performing the cups for a closer that was me. Keep in mind that Sunday's performers were, to the best of my knowledge, all contracted to perform in the park. All of them worked Friday and Saturday as well, but, according to my sources, Sunday's event is not all that lucrative. The crowd is there for picking and grinning (it's either the beginning or end of some type of bluegrass event). Not saying that it can't be worked, but the guys I know said don't bother, and not because they were working it but because nobody made any money working it that wasn't contracted to be there. That being said, that doesn't mean it can't change between now and next year. Speaking of next year, bring your gear. I'm sorry you decided not to "bug" me. Hey, I'm not bashful, I like to eat, and saying, "Good talkin' to ya, but I gotta start my next show," has become easier for me over the years! I thought more guys were going to show up for the Fest than did, so I'm sure you can find some room to set up a pitch. Joe Zeman aka The Mage Ulysses |

Last year I went as a spectator, and it was then that I decided this summer I would busk. I've only been out 3 times this summer, but the season isn't over yet. I worked 2 hours, in the shade, just down the street from Joe, who it was fun to chat with a bit. I had some good crowds and it was a great opportunity to work on the work. When I was between shows Joe down the street and the guy across the street (who I talked to but never got a name or don't remember it) always had big crowds. My kids showed up (and I had to move my car) after a couple hours, so I turned into a spectator. I saw D. Mooncalf. He seemed busy, but was always on the other side of the street. It's a great place for rookies, and probably even better for the pros. I look forward to it again next year.

Teachersears I think that I caught the very end of your act, I asked when the next show was and you said that you had to move your car.
I would like to perform next year but I’m not sure about the heat. |

Greetings and Salutations,
Work a shady spot, drink plenty of water, and wear proper clothing. I've got a great Stetson Fedora. I picked up a $15 straw fedora from Target so I would not have to wear the Stetson this year. I discovered it was much too hot to wear last year so got the new hat for this year's festival. See you next year! Joe Zeman aka The Mage Ulysses |

Mysterious,
That was me. I did a poor job of parking management. Sorry about that. I never made it back. My spot was sort of taken when I returned so I walked across the street to talk to the magician over there. Then my family showed up and we went tourist. Hope that you can make it next year. |
