My 14-yo daughter makes beaded jewelry and yesterday I helped her set up a table at the local farmers market. In the past she's just sat there, smiled, and answered questions when people asked. And sold a few pieces.
But she's now selling a strand of beads that has magnets embedded in it -- you can wrap it around your wrist as a bracelet or around your neck as a necklace -- the magnets hold it in place. I told her she needed to demonstrate that and to show her what I meant, I did a demo for the next lady that walked by, and the lady decided to buy one for $20. I was so proud when my daughter spoke up and said, "For only $10 more you can get an extra and use it as a gift!" So the lady bought two and I knew some of my marketing was rubbing off. =:) My daughter ended the day excited because it was her best day ever selling her jewelry. So here's the question... There are other jewelry booths at that market where the people have *hundreds* of different necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc., and after reading the "flash is cash" thread I was wondering whether having a booth full of jewelry would be better -- or whether she should focus on the magnetic strands and "pitch" them to people rather than just doing passive selling like everyone else. I mean, she could still have a lot of the magnetic strands in her booth, it's just that she wouldn't have a variety of jewelry. I'm thinking it's like pitching Svengali Decks vs having a magic store. Any thoughts on pitching jewelry rather than just selling it? Thanks. Jay Jennings

I know very little about selling jewellery but oddly enough I have seen pitchmen work it as a demonstration product. I think British pitchmen call it "working the tom" Or is it "working the funkum" I always get the two terms mixed up. I think one refers to jewellery and the other working perfume. I am not sure which is which. I am not up to speed on their lingo, I am afraid.
In fact I once knew a Svengali pitchman who worked jewellery occasionally. I know very little about it except that it IS a demonstration product. I have seen treet pitchmen work jewellery but since they have to escape from the cops at any moment they don't carry a very large inventory. I won't advise on the jewellery thing since I have no experience in it. I am liable to say the wrong thing and end up costing you money. |

I don't know about jewelry or product mix, but I do know that if your daughter will say "Hello" or "Good Afternoon" to everyone that passes by, and says "Have you seen the new magnetic jewelry?" and then demoes it on herself, she will probably increase her sales by 200% or 300%, if not more.
From my experience at fleas, the vendors who sit and wait for people to stop and ask questions are the same ones who will also take home most of the stock that they brought. Even just standing up instead of sitting down should result in an improved take. SETH

Zig Ziglar says when people are walking around in a show, the last thing they want is for someone to try to sell 'em something. They wanna look but be left alone and are ALWAYS thinking "NO!" So if you ask 'em, "Would you like to see this?" What are they gonna say? The trick is to ask 'em a question that they can answer, "NO!"
So I ask 'em, "Have you seen the magic cards?" "NO!" For my strippers, "Have you squeezed one yet?" "NO!" Once you broke the ice, then you can launch into the "demo", because they got that "NO!" outta the way. Good luck. Jon |

All salesmen are pitchmen ... that's why it's called a "sales pitch". It doesn't matter what you sell, you should have a sales pitch ready.
