I'm looking for a coin that is gimmicked to turn into another coin, automatically and with no sleight of hand. One example is nickel to half dollar by tango. To my knowledge, no other similar gimmick exists. Am I correct? Thanks!

No.
Quite basically, a copper/silver coin would turn from an Engilish Penny to a Kennedy Half dollar and vice versa with no particular sleight of hand to exact an amazing change. I actually had the old Nickel to Half coin, those were the days. Now I can do it without any such gimmick and do it backwards and forwards. I should've learned what I learned last, first...And I probably would never have had such a coin. Oh, and then there's a Slippery Sam type-gimmick that allows you to turn one coin into another without any particular sleight of hand. I'm thinking there are perhaps some clever others out there.

Well, I guess we're in the Trick Coin section so you probably are attracted to these babies...I know I was when I was younger. They make the magic happen for you, inspite of you if you simply follow the instructions. That's cool, but as I got older I came to recognize that the Sleight of hand stuff you tend to avoid is really the way to greater freedom in this stuff. Not that you still won't use gaffed coins but that when you do, there's a greater since of freedom and ability you tend to have with them, not to mention there are also what I would call, "Big Boy Trick Coins" out there that aren't beginner stuff.
That being said, nickel to half is an old trick coin, pretty interesting little devil and a beginner can certainly handle it. But I would recommend something like getting a copper/silver coin and learning the little routine with it, it's much more rewarding with greater options, and not hard to do. As to changes, I would also recommend you look into Scotch & Soda. It's not a one coin change as you speak of here but it's pretty cool beginner trick that involves changing a coin in an even cleverer way. I would also suggest that you look into learning how to do a basic Spellbound routine. Now this is not using a trick coin, but it does beautifully turn one coin very magically into another one and more. I think all this is beginner stuff that you can handle with some practice. -Mb

I second the Scotch & Soda to start with. It is such a POWERFUL item.
Hopping Half is another powerhouse. With those two, you can have a pocket full of magic.

Yes, I definitely agree. Copper/Silver, Scotch N Soda, Hopping Halves - all great recommendations.
The use of a coin s***l over a smaller coin then n**ting a coin that matches the s***l in between is another option for a beautiful coin change. And it's probably the most versatile of coin gimmicks too (reproductions, vanishes, penetrations, etc) I also recommend checking out a Copper, Silver, Brass set. Dan Watkins has awesome routines for these common gimmicks on his "Coin Man Walking" DVD. There are some great effects that happen in your spectators hands and he walks you through all of the sleight of hand required. The sleight of hand he teaches is very easy and even allows for the coins to be inspected. http://www.realcoinmagic.com is a one stop shop for coin gimmicks. Send them an email and they should be able to help you find a coin that meets your needs. |

Tango makes a magnetic Scotch & Soda that is a nice gaff.
