The internet is an amazing thing. Some years back I began corresponding with Sweden's Tomas Blomberg about a clever underground approach of his to ACAAN. This, in turn, led to a correspondence about ACAAN with the legendary J.K. Hartman that ventured into many new areas. Now, Mr. Hartman has collected eight of his strongest approaches from our year-plus exchange into a book called CAAN Craft. This book should be appearing mid-September--with an ad appearing on the Café--and I'm very excited about opening up our conversation to include a lot more participants.

Who is the publisher?

This is fairly unrelated, but is there a picture of J.K. Hartman anywhere? I've always wondered what he looks like. I actually thought he was dead until a few months ago. Darn my ignorance!

Yes, Mr. Hartman is very much alive, but he prefers to keep a low photographic profile, even to the publisher of his latest book.

Any news?

The books are about to arrive and pre-orders should be going out shortly. David Britland's strongly positive lead review is in the current issue of Genii, and I look forward to hearing how everyone else responds to the many new ACAAN approaches that Mr. Hartman has come up with. (Other info can be found at my website.)

Is it a book about CAAN or ACAAN? Can the spectator think of any card?
Thanks Markus |

It appears to be called CAAN Craft, does that help Markus?

All the items in the book involve a spectator's naming any card without restriction. Mr. Hartman chose the title to echo his previous Card Craft.

These days with ebooks in the $40 range, to get a real book by J.K. Hartman, well designed with extensive illustrations by Tony Dunn, for $35 is a steal. The methods progress from those using stacks to impromptu methods, with one involving a specially printed card (included) that guides the spectator through what is going to happen and itself helps make the magic happen. New sleights in some cases, all within the capability of you and me. Like Gordon, I was lucky enough to be able to follow the development of the ideas in this book from beginning to end. It's a real treat for card men. I have no investment in the product other than wishing Jerry well.

I received this book last Friday and having already read it I can tell you it is very good. As with any book like this (especially those from J.K. Hartman), the value is really found outside of the routines. I found quite a bit to get me thinking and revisiting methods I've used before, along with trying out some new ideas. I like the routines "as is" but the real fun has been in taking the ideas and toying with them. Where I stopped playing a while ago, I have once again picked up due to inspiration from this book. I recommend it. Very simple design, excellent illustrations, solid content and great ideas... makes for a nice overall package to me and one of my favorites as of recent times. The only thing I don't like about it is that I read it so quickly! It is a short book, but worth it, I think.

I recived my copy today and I agree with the fritz about the design and the illustrations (Tony Dunn). As I haven't read it yet (but looking foreward to do it) I can't say much about the content and ideas.

I just bought CAAN Craft and find it to be a good book. The only downside is that the book was at times complicated to understand. Also, I assumed the effects were impromptu although more than half are not.
