Howdy y'all,
all the interesting threads lately have perfectly coincided with my descision to finally put together a "real" bizarre show (ie. one man play, story based show). Exciting stuff. I have the story and outline of my show, as well as a lot of the back story and most of the routines I'm going to use. I have a few things I'm still working on that I'd appreciate any opinions on, I was going to start separate threads for each but that didn't seems necessary. 1) you've invoked and sacrificed to the spirits and they now give you a sign that they are pleased, what is the sign? Of course a REAL sign like this would be something esoteric that would need to be interpreted by a shaman or priest; I want something that is unambiguous to the audience themselves that the offerings have been accepted. My first thought was to have slates rubberbanded before the ritual and take them apart afterwards for a written message of approval. I still like that, but while I want the message to be unambiguous I would also like it to be a little more subtle. My second idea was to do the same thing, but have the slates give several numbers. We would then count down from several packets of tarot cards (that an audience member had shuffled and cut at will) and these would deliver the message. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I like the idea of slates but am not at all attached to them. 2) You want to demonstrate that everyone has powers and an audience member is invited up for a demonstration. Ideally these would be active/magical powers rather than passive/psychic powers and would be clear but fairly subtle ( I want my character, with his training and knowledge to be the powerful one, but make it clear that others could do this if they had the inclination). Again thoughts are appreciated. If you know of an appropriate routine great, but even general ideas would be helpful. 3)I would like to pierce my tongue, fakir style (gimmick fakir style that is, not for real), does anyone know where to get more information on fakir gimmicks, where to buy them and how to use them effectively? Thank You all. I truly appreciate any help and thoughts you may have on this. I am VERY excited that my bizarre show seems to finally be coming together (At the Mountains of madness is now on the back burner, I still love it and want to do it, but this show is already much more satisfying to me 'artistically') -Courtney Kolb

1. An apport of bunch of flowers after first having a spectator choose from a selection of types ( could also have the scent waft around prior to this .
2. An effect called "Stats" needles, easily found in search engine . 3. As above but done on spectator once youve demonstrated a bogus technique for them to try . Hope this sparks off some thought , Regards Mark

1 - Depends the "spirit" you're invoking. Your description is far to vague, you need to identify with great precision the entity you're calling. The entity will give a sign according to what "it" is.
2 - In Hauntics (and Compendium Sortilegionis, in French), I develop X-Mentalism. If you serach this forum, I developped the concept at different places. 3 - Fake tongue or c shaped needle. Classic among the classics. |

Seadog, don't take this wrong, but you are thinking like a magician. Already working on effects and no discussion on character and little thought to a story. Unless of course you are reluctant to reveal the full story (which I don't blame you).
First start on your character the works best for you. Then a original story. Both items (character and story) should be written out with great consideration. Then you can work on what performance elements warrant inclusion into the play. Otherwise you are just doing a series of unconnected circus tricks that bores your audience. Work out the performance (rehearse/practice). If done properly, everything else will fall into place. JeryB |

I appreciate your thoughts and agree that story comes first. As I mentioned in my post I do have a story, as well as a back story and a show outline. I don't have a problem talking about story exactly, but would rather not until everything is ready for the public; only because I may change something in the future and it would make conversation confusing. As for things falling in place, everything essentially has. The sign of the spirits satisfaction would in reality not be clear to the spectators, because it would be divined by myself and interpreted for people. This is fine in general, but does not keep for the effect I'm looking for in this piece. As for the spectator having power, you may be right and I'll think more on it, but I'd still like to hear suggestions. The Curator I hadn't thought of including that information, but your right it does make a difference. They are power spirits, familiars gained through use of traditional but not understood rites ("degenerate" rites you could say). They are amoral and will hurt or heal for the person they are attached to as long they get the energy they desire. They having a corrupting influence on both the morals and sanity of any who work with them and almost always "eat" said person in the end. markthorold I like the idea of an apport, but I don't know if it would flow with the show. Flowers probably wouldn't be right, but I will investigate the idea more. Thanks Also, have you used "stats" before? Is it as good as it says? I'm waiting for a PM response from someone, but I got the impression that they didn't think it was realistic enough. Quote:

Jaz got a jump on the movement thing but my first thought, and what I'm using with photographs, is the haunted deck move. Say you have a tarot card you want to produce then do so with the haunted movement then also have the card with a marking that wasn't there before. For example you show the death card (which we all know indicates a new beginning in presentation....unless to someone you want to mess with) and then, when the card comes out, the face of death is bleached out or the word 'live' is visible across it, I'd again use a bleaching or eraser to make it look less like it was done by a pen or something.
There plenty of things a group can do. Check Psychological Sublities, my copy is in San Jose so if you can find it you can read it. You are in Berkeley, NOT piercing your tongue would be freakier. |

How about the sound of coins dropping?
"When I am asking the spirits for something" I usually offer them a gold coin, if they are satisfied, "they take it" and you can hear them putting it in their purse. hope it helps or sparks something.
Double posters should be shot!

I like that a lot. I'm starting off by offering them coins (well, coin like things), so I'm not sure if bringing coins up again at the end would work exactly, but it has sparked a few ideas.
Thank You
