I'm sure we've all seen those little toy flicker pictures that show simple animations. I imagine they work on a system of prisms since the toys are made up of lines of plastic "grids". However, back in the 1950's I saw a large version in a store that sold kitsch. Viewed from one angle, it was a portrait of Jesus Christ. Viewed from another angle, it changed to a portrait of the Virgin Mary.
Since the flicker toys were pretty cheap (they even showed up often as prizes in boxes of Cracker Jacks), I figure they must not be too difficult to make. Does anyone know any books that explain how to make one of these toys, or a company that will make them for you? I don't have any specific ideas for application to magic, although a natural would be to have two cards selected and the flicker toy is removed from an envelope and shown to have predicted both cards. The baby picture gag effect might be another application. It could also be used at retirement parties to show the honoree at the beginning of his/her career as well as at retirement. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

If I understand correctly what you mean, Google Lenticular and you will find software to help you create such images and animations.

Yes these are lenticular images. It's a composite image made of a screen of thin cylindrical lenses superposed to several sliced images. You can produce transformations or 3D effects based on the thecnique of autostereoscopy.
There was a trend of these in the fifties and it's back now with the help of 3D computer graphics. Several companies produce these for advertising. If you want to produce this yourself, you will need to make the images with computer graphics, a multi-lens camera or with a standard camera on a rail to produce several images that will echo the parameters of the lenticular sheet. http://www.3dphotopro.com/lenticular_tool_kit.html http://www.promagic.net/index.html http://miragio.com/en/lenticulaire.htm |
