Don't get me wrong, mb, I'm very grateful for all of the advice. Like everyone said, I'm focusing primarily on the one coin routine and the two books/DVDs. I'm actually in the middle of my second readtrough of bobo. I asked about what works for other people so I could put more focus on specific vanishes and routines rather than trying to digest it all at once.
I do admit that I'm pretty much a kid in a candy shop right mow. I really enjoy seeing all of the possibilities of what I can learn. But I'm also doing this so I can find exactly where I want to go on my journey of learning. I'm still practicing fundamentals and I always will be. As far as being inscribe, I'm actually traveling right now. My replies have been from my iPhone thus far. And it's really awkward to post on the forum with it. But when I get back, I plan to be a fully active member. I'm just not sure anyone will find my small amount of experience with books and DVDs everyone has seen to be useful yet. Lastly, thanks for the pointer on ponta the smith. I recently got his DVD, SICK, from a friend. I'll check it out for inspiration. A lot of his stuff seems to go right back to Roth and bobo so it's nice to see another interpretation. Thanks to everyone who's given me advice so far. Just raiding this forum has helped me grow. |

Sorry, I meant "inactive", not "inscribe". I can't actually see what I'm typing below the first paragraph or so on my iphone, and the autocorrect tends to be a little screwy.

Hey Maverick,
Take the time to go back and re-read Mike Gallo's advice because it doesn't get any better than that. When I was in your shoes, one of Mike's good friends, Roger Sherman took the time to help me and believe me it made all of the difference in the world. Everybody here has given you great advice... Hope this helps.. Bill |

I hope Mike Gallo, whom I greatly respect along with his legendary father and his brother Joey, doesn't put two in the back of my ear for this. Besides, Mike, I'm Italian too
Mavericklancer, IF you truly wanted a couple more things, I would suggest any material from Mike Gallo and Dr. Michael Rubenstein. That said, I wholeheartedly agree with the experts here concerning Bobo. There really is a TON of non-gaffed coin magic in that classic. (I DO hope you have the Magic Inc. hardback as opposed to the Dover reprint). Ron Bauer did a great teach-in on Gadabout Coins that may just re-ignite you on Bobo. I am NOT a coin guy. These guys here can knock me for five any day of the week, but, I have yet to meet a coin expert who has NOT studied Bobo. And here's a dirty secret: card guys study him too Namaste, Vlad |

I know there's great stuff in Bobo, since my favorite routines all come from there. I was just referring to the routines printed in Bobo's. They tend to start with a handkerchief or shell/gaffed coin routine or use one of those for the climax. The reason I started this thread was to find what other things I could use for openers/climaxes that didn't use any of the above. Even the routines that didn't make heavy use of those seemed somehow lacking to me.
Also, I'm currently looking for Ron Bauer's Gadabout Coins Revisited. I really want to avoid buying it online, as it'd be a single purchase and thus not worth the shipping. It also happens that the only decent magic shop near me is only open wednesday - sunday, which are the days I'm busiest... So in general, I didn't mean to knock Bobo. I just really wanted to see other examples of routine construction other than the 18 routines listed there. And just for general reference, I've ditched the book version in favor of the ebook version I got from a friend. It's the 2006 version, and is extremely convenient since I can just click to access certain sections or use the search function. |

Thanks for the tip, Pete. I'll be sure to check it out next time in the area. Good magic shops around here are few and far between. But I live in OC, so I might not make it out that far for a while.

Mavericklancer.... Bobo's is full of routined working material. The secret to that book is making it your own.
For instance: yap about how long it takes California to get a refund on your bottle cap. "Argh Nole Cuhn bare lee pro nunce bah tull" Patter how you found 'a magical quicker way'. An express refund as I (you) call it. Then do a bobo switch (pg 10 of the hardbound) on the cap for quarter (or whatever significant change piece you have in your pocket at the time) and voila! instant lead in OR segway during a routine made up of Bobo's book work. |

There is always the option of creating your own routines from the material in bobo's. you don't have to use the ones that are pre made. simply take 3 to 5 tricks that logically go together. identify the strengths and weaknesses of each to determine an order to put them in an viola. personal coin routine. OK so its not that easy but it may make you better.

While Bobo's is full of great stuff, I really wanted to see what effects really worked for other people. For example, I really liked the Winged Silver routine. But this past weekend, I saw a close up magician at a comedy and magic club where the spectators were pretty underwhelmed by it. Just because I like something doesn't mean it will work for the public.
It's also a bit difficult for me to identify what makes good openers and climaxes because I've never made a full set before. Again, why I wanted to see what generally works for others. |

Unless people are specifically there to see YOUR SHOW, there is no hard and fast rule as to what works in a performance. Something that kills at the Museum Gala might not work as well at the Salty Dawg Saloon. I find myself in a wide variety of situations. Part of the fun is attempting to read the crowd and adapt accordingly. You can usually tell right away when you're going in the wrong direction.
