Can't remember which McBride DVD it was but he talked about a core act and a show built around it. I was wondering how long a core act should be? Should it be about the length of like Lance's dove act being his core or what? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am also thinking this is like a signature act that defines you as a magician. Also tips on developing it.

It also might be different for different situations For me in highschool, on stage or parlor my core/signature was my miracle ball zombie routine. On the street, its a bit harder to define as a show must flow more evenly because people come and leave in the middle of the show. But my high point was probably my sucker sliding die box routine. In the kids show Im putting together now, its probably the dove pan appearance of my "magic pet birdie." (A lutino cockatiel with great stage personality In general ALL entertainment follows an arc. It starts with a "grabber"... something to lock the audience in and set the mood. It them builds to a climax, with a small amount of falling action afterward. (Aristotle btw figured this out a loooong time ago. His writings on drama are well worth reading today.)
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.

I think your core is a hard hitting beginning, a strong middle, and a big finish. After that everything else would consist of interchangable routines. I don't really know what Jeff McBride meant, but that's my opinion.
