Hey everyone,
I'm looking for some kind of organization that offers licenses from a variety of christian artists, and was wondering if anybody knew of any good resourses. Also, if anyone is aware of some good royalty-free music, I'd be interested in that, as well, naturally. I have found this website: http://www.ccli.com/ but it seems to me that all they do is for using sheet music or lyrics, and not pre-existing recordings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! In the UK, we use our CCL license to cover music played on cds and also videos we show.
For royalty free music look at Arthur Steed's website, http://www.arthurstead.com/Products.htm Great value and especially written to bring out the best in our performances.

Here is a link to where I get my royalty free music. http://freeplaymusic.com/
There is a huge selection of music to choose from, I mean HUGE! Please read the terms first though because I am not sure what you are wanting to use it for. For most purposes, it's free to use. I'm not a big fan of buying pre-selected royalty free CD's because most of them sound like they were made on a software program. I bought a royalty free CD and only liked one song. This way here, you can choose from thousands of songs that YOU want. If you want, you can even use the songs at freeplay to compile your own CD for sale. I won't mention any names, but I do know of one royalty free CD being sold that did exactly that. Hope this helps.

Correction: For some uses it's free. The terms explain it all.

I want to use it for performing to music with silent acts, or occasionally, simply as background music while I'm speaking (this would be much rarer).
At this point in time, I would not be recording for distributing my performance, although I may record for my own personal viewing. Looking at freeplaymusic.com's terms, it looks like I would need a license to be able to use any of their songs for my purposes, at least as I understood it. Correct me if I'm wrong, Gospel Dan.

Not for personal use. For personal use it's free, but there are some conditions.
Their licensing fee is very reasonable, and flexable. When I contacted them I explained what I would use the music for. I use the music for background music during my performance. The licensing fee will differ, but I paid a very reasonable fee in my opinion. If you do not charge a fee to perform, you may be able to use it for free. If you have any questions it's good to direct them to freeplay. They are good people their and will accomadate your needs. Have you gone through their library yet? Listen to some of their samples. Some really good stuff in there.

Here's a good set of general guidelines from Word Music:
http://www.wordmusic.com/home/copyright I'm sure that each publisher has something similar. After looking at several Christian music websites, Lillenas and others, their copyright rules are all similar, but none seems to address the situation of using recordings as background music. They are geared toward copying sheet music or using their music when making recordings of your choir, etc.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

He has several royalty-free CDs, and one of them is SPECIFICALLY GOSPEL / CHRISTIAN MUSIC ("Make it Gospel CD"). So, he basically created a CD just for Christian Illusionists to use (a very niche market). Be sure to look for it on the website. Thanks for all your help, everyone.
Yes, I saw that gospel magic CD, and have decided I'll buy it along with one of his other cds, just to see if I like it or not. But it sounds like it could work pretty well.

I thought it was the venues (ie. church, school, etc) responsibility for music licenses?

Mrmatthew - this depends on the location - different countries have different rules.
Also when you want to record your act, ie on to dvds, you are liable.

I paid $100 a year for a license to use 2 songs in my show.
Broadcast Any local, regional, national, standard or cable broadcaster that does not have an ASCAP/BMI/SESAC .blanket. license as defined above. Television use premiering outside the U.S. *Advertising and promo or other similar uses *Infomercials *All radio use *Non-broadcast Multimedia *Live events *Power Point presentations *Trade shows/conventions *Internet *Any website including but not limited to personal websites and any website used to promote a business, product, service, organization or club; *Any videos including videos posted, viral or disseminated in any other fashion. I have also retained permission directly from Apologetics Parody Band to use two of their songs in my shows. I was given written permission to use two of their songs in my shows. Freeplay has a fantastic selection. And, if you contact them to let them know exactly what you want to use the music for, they will come up with a specific license to fit your needs. Why pay $50-$100 on a cd compilation where you might only use one song at the most, when you can choose fom thousands of songs and pay for what you will use. I prefer to pay for what I use without paying for music I won't use.
