I've had trouble getting over the discomfort when trying pencil or nail up the nose. I just tried a 'balloon animal' balloon, just filled enough to make it rigid. Works great to desensitise the area (and you have the great effect of pulling the other end out of your mouth and flossing away!

Add a ball of air to the end, so you can push the air from one end to the other. Be the first kid on your block....<G>

i do this at bars with long coctail swords all the time. One guy claimed not to believe it , knowing that I was a magician. I had him pinch the handle of the sword while I held his hand and pulled an impossibly long platic sword out of my nose. I thought he was going to feint. If you allow the spectator to hold the nail or sword or whatever. Make sure that youe firmly hold their hand because the last thing you want is for them to push!
