I just got an old deck of cards for a particular effect. They are Bicycle Seconds 808 and have an Acorn back.
Is there anywhere I can find a history of back designs and check when these cards come from? The person I bought them off believed them to be 1928 but I would just like some more information about them. I can perhaps upload some photos later, they really look great as an object (aged and well used) they look like these http://www.wopc.co.uk/usa/uspcc/bicycle-seconds.html but with a different back I have tried searches here but no luck. Thanks for your help

It is doubtful that any of the Bicycle Seconds would be of a huge value to collectors, because they are, by definition, not top of the line cards.
USPCCo used to have a web site that gave some history of their back designs, but they have changed hands several times during the past few years, and I think a lot of that history has disappeared. There are a few books with the history of playing cards, though. Posted: Sep 11, 2010 8:42pm I should add this. I cannot remember the name of the place, but there is a business in the UK that carries all sorts of cards made by USPCCo, including the Elephant back and some of the other more esoteric ones. They might be able to provide some information. The face designs tell a lot. The indices were much smaller during the 19th century. The early to middle 20th century featured the cards with the rather blocky looking pips, such as the ones shown in the photo you linked to. If there is a date on the tax stamp, that might be of some help. USPCCo is quite famous for reissuing variants of their back designs.

Thanks, yeah the history section is gone now.
I'm not worried about their value, I didn't pay much for them, just curious as to their date

Dating can often be done from the tax stamp.
Does yours have a tax stamp affixed? If there's no tax stamp, and a USPCC seal instead......then your cards are post 1965. If they're pre 1965, there should be a dated tax stamp (although it's often totally unreadable on older decks in less than great shape). That's the Bicycle Tangent Back BTW. It's one of the backs that Bicycle has released, and re-released over the years. It's been a popular design, and it's also part of their recent "Vintage Collection" releases. |
