I was going through my close up stuff and I found something that I don't remember what it is. If anyone has ANY idea what it is and can just let me know the name of it, then I can do something with it.
Description
A small brass cube with Red Green Yellow White Blue and Black circles with a thread through the cube and fake pearl endings of the string.
If anyone needs more info on it, let me know. Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks!
I tried to upload a picture of it, but I don't think it worked.

Dear Thalor,
It's called Cubio.
You hold the string in an up down direction with the cube toward your upper hand and through the power of your concentration ( I'll PM You) you can will it to stop its downward travel.
My thanks to my partner Tom Allen for remembering the name.

Technically, Cubio was a Tenyo item and was made in plastic. Not sure of the exact maker of the all-brass piece you have. There were some Cubios made "on the cheap" that were very simple in operation, and others that could be "turned on" and off by tapping a particular side or pressing in on one of the sides to make the works start working internally.

I bought one of those which can be "turned on/off" a long time ago. It bothered me that the instructions told me how to accomplish the effect, but not how the mechanics did work..

How do you ACTIVATE this one. I have tried everything from spinning it to tapping every face and corner....I cant get it to do anything I may have to go buy another so I can see the instructions.

Try pushing the string into the cube from both sides at once. That may "activate" it. If it does, then pulling the string taut will "deactivate" it.

AAAAAAAAAH - Wrong answer! I don't believe Tenyo was the originator of this trick. I still have my first Cubio. It was made of Catalin (a plastic like material similar to Bakelite) by Royal Magic. The copyright on the instructions is 1952!
There is a similar effect known as the "Obedient Orange" that has been around much longer than that. Not much new under the sun.

This Cubio is solid brass, to activate it you need the correct color up, cannot remember which color, just try each side, no need to tap, but once activated, keep the string taught.

You're right, Tenyo didn't originate it, but was it called Cubio in its original form? Usually Tenyo does at least come up with a different name for an effect.

Steve, Yes. The instructions clearly say "Cubio".

After some playing around with it, I discovered how to "activate" it and Spellbinder pushed me in the right direction. The cube has to have a certain color "up" and you push the strings into the cube at the same time.
Thanks all!

There is a similar effect in the Enc of Rope Tricks, called Krazy Kube.
The cube will drop down the rope under the Magicians control, the cube can be spun around the rope, and at the magi's command reverses the direction of the spinning.
The book shows the mechanics of how this works.

The effect goes all the way back to the days of Carl Brema. It is based on the Obedient cube and there are three effects that can be performed with it. The reason for the colored rings was to code the sides so you knew which side needed to be up to reset but also to do a color changing cube effect. In the older instructions you were told that it could be used as a sex detector (weight on a string). I have instructions for Cubio if you would like a copy of them.

I would love them. I can't find mine. It would be most helpful.
