Contact the IRS! If you perform on the street you are entitled to tax deductions for the items you perform with even if you have annother job. I was talking to an IRS guy about this. Also can anyone discuss finding an appropriate place to perform my citys very cool about this sort of stuff but I don't want to step on the toes of any other performers or their performance space as I have heard people an become very defensive.

There's lots of threads about finding places to perform. The rules and customs vary from place to place, you should probably approach it with cautious respect regarding someone's pitch, but with the knowledge that you have the same rights as anyone else and you should be able to find a spot. The thing is, the person performing a pitch doesn't own it, but there may be a rotation in place. Some folks will get seriously defensive about a good pitch. Some will give you the chance to earn a spot in a rotation. Some places there are sign up sheets and assigned pitches. First rule, good foot traffic is absolutely important. Second rule, don't ruin the pitch by not respecting the established customs such as they are, by cranking up an amp too loud or something like that. Regarding the IRS, since I operate as a business, I advertise, do parties etc.. I figure I'm already on their radar, so I just play by the rules and pay my taxes. You're right, there are quite a few legitimate write-offs.
