My grandpa just gave me something today.....he said it was a trick......but nobody knows how to do anything with it.
it looks like a small book made out of wood. No pages or anything.......but it looks like a book. the binding looks like there is a way to make it come out somehow. my grandpa says he thinks it has something to do with tapping it on the table. any thoughts on what it could be? |

I read the packaging that it came in....it says "Mini Book Box" but didn't come with instructions or anything.

Maybe it's just a box made to look like a book.
Probably just to hold small items. Not a trick box; unless you tap it on the table and a secret compartment falls out. Like those card switch boxes. |

Try placing it flat on a table and spinning it. Some trick boxes have a lock that works off centrifugal force.

Often these are made like the Japanese puzzle boxes where a panel would slide on one of the sides. Check to see if there is any part of the book that slides to one side or the other and then try to pull out the drawer.

Some puzzle boxes can be very elaborate, with pin holes that require a straightened paper clip to be inserted, or a catch that can only be triggered by a magnet. If it opened accidently, then it's probably not going to be overly complicated.
First try sliding each of the sides in every direction. If anything moves, even a quarter inch, hold that and try another side. In a quiet room, try carefully turning the box over in all directions and listen for any clicking or sliding noises. Next try helping gravity by turning it with a little "heft", that is letting it drop a little before stopping it. Finally try tapping all sides on the table. dmueller's spinning idea is a good one. Try it in both directions, and with each side topmost. Still not open? Try pressing in on the drawer as you do each of the above. Depending on how much it's worth to you, you could video your attempts, so that if it accidently comes open again, you'll have a record of the last few things you did. Good Luck!
...what if I could read your mind?
