There are several tutorials online about building a simulated flame device using silk material and lights, but I am wondering whether anyone here has actually built one and how it worked.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

You can find these at discounters for around $49. By the time you add up labor and materials, it's probably cheaper than you can build yourself. These will either hang from three chains or stand on three legs (all included in the price.) I use two of them during my Levitation scene - one on each side of the floating woman - and it looks great. Always gets an audible reaction from the kids in the audience (oohs and ahhs) when the curtain opens and the flames are flickering on a dimly lit stage. Instantly sets the mood. Good luck! |

I built one years and years ago for a church play. I used a fan from a wall fireplace insert. My wife made the rocks and logs to go around the unit. After we painted them it looked really good. It was a long, long time ago, so I can't remember much else.

Being it is Holloween time, these are all over the place. The secret (it you want to call it that) is the washed out orange material that creates the flame. I seen one at the local magic shop. I thought it was junk, then turned it on, and was really surprised how realistic it looked.

Pro versions use two colored lights or even three. I ahve seen orange and white and I think orange yellow and white. The bulbs are aimed at white silk and there is usually two pieces of material at crossed angles in the flame shape. The fans also makes a difference. Getting it to flicker and fall will make it look even more realistic. But even the best one might look funny from the wrong angle.
I have two store bought pots with two orange bulbs and a fan. Sometimes they look great other times if they get stuck, look bad. Also the effect can be ruined if not bright enough(ie room is too light) Then it looks like what it is, especially on video. |

Whatever you get or use, make sure that the flames are made from silk. The cheaper models use a polyester/rayon material that just isn't quite fluid enough.
