I'd be honored to have my presentation included. I'm guessing that it would also be nice to include Bob's presentation (The Probability Pack). After all, Bob's original work is out of print.

Just came across this thread...has there been any work on a compendium of Up The Ante routines and variations? I love performing the original as Martyn wrote it, but would love to see what others have come up with.

Hi Bob,
I must admit that it has apparently fallen by the wayside but, the more I think about it, the more I would like it to happen......let me write to all those concerned who expressed an interest in contributing and I can see what we have! Quite exciting!! Will keep you posted, sir! Cheers Martyn

I am one of those and in my review of Raphael Czaja's new e-book I prefaced with what has been going on with me that has prevented me from doing the things I love. I am trying to change that and I still have the Tarot idea if Martyn really wants to go ahead with Up the Ante.

Get cracking, Martyn! . This is a great idea and I'll be in line to pick one up. From the looks of it, though, I'll be at the back of a very long line.

Some 4+ years have gone by since the last posting about the possibility of an UTA compendium. Has there been any progress toward this end? Inquiring minds want to know!

Wow, I had completely forgotten about 'Up the Ante' by Martyn Smith! I have to relearn this. Absolutely AMAZING how this works!

Doug, this little gem is worth relearning and has gone into my repertoire for the past two years. It never ceases to amaze myself on how this should even work but is great 10 minute piece of magic and stuns everyone I have performed it for. This trick could have easily be called, "What are the odds".

A bit intimidated to throw out a suggested way to perform this superb trick but here goes. I would talk about a conversation I had with my father before I went off to college. "We were always a card playing family - in fact my dad had to be dragged away from his weekly poker game on the night I was born - , and I fancied myself as something of a card player. As I sat down with my dad before the drive to my first year of college he gave me the standard parental advice about avoiding the new temptations I would face. His last and sternest warning concerned gambling with cards. "Now I know you think you are good at cards but you will meet many better than you". He picked a deck off the table and performed a few cuts and shuffles (false) and showed me how he could control dealing (Stewart James "Further than that"- with the line "but I'm even better than that"). Then, he set the deck in his pocket and took out a small packet of cards. "People will even hide cards in their hands and switch them in". (Performed NFW), "You might consider those just party pieces, but the best don't even let you know there is anything going on". He took out the deck (deck switch) "Here - cut the cards" He then cut some more and shuffled some more (I do a false table cut, false overhand and false Hindu) "In fact tell me a number between 20 and 30, and hand me over that battery card shuffler we use to speed up our family games" I said 23 and he duly counted out 23 cards, he put one pile in each side of that card shuffler and I pushed the button, (Perform Up the Ante) "Now, he said, you can walk away and take this conversation as a warning, or you can turn these cards over and if I am correct you will promise never to gamble in college". I kept my promise!
I have also used "Up the Ante" at the top high roller table at a charity dinner where I would have the diners try to outdo each other with their contribution based on the improbability of the result) |
