I have a Johnson C/S coin that I just love. It's very well made, feels great to the touch and was a great value. Also have a Johnson Half dollar s***l that's pretty good. To me, this is all you need. It's great quality that works well and a great price that won't break the bank. All due respect to the big custom guys but all things considered Johnson's proportionately is just as good.

Within the last year I had the opportunity to call Johnson (I was looking for a leather "cap" for a cap and pence routine with quarters - which wasn't sold individually on their website) and I spoke to a very pleasant woman who shipped one out to me for a very reasonable price. No curtness with my recent experience. That's not to say you folks didn't have a bad experience, but to let you know that Johnson is not always bad to deal with. Perhaps they have a bad employee or went through a bad time. I know from experience that a bad employee can make the owner look terrible. If someone knows them personally, perhaps they might forward these experiences to them.

Here's the scoop on Johnson. The "old man" passed on several years ago and the son runs the show now and yes their quality has suffered as a result. I use Johnson regularly and have had nascient contact with them directly. All I can say is that dealers are turning away from them in droves because they simply don't produce enough to meet "demand" hence the rise of Tango. That coupled with the other firm(s) going away Sterling who made decent sets and coins, and the Sasco junk that's all over and newbie Roy Kuppers the market is starving for a Johnson level producer (Kuppers is getting there, but isn't yet and anyone who tells you that Tango is as good is lying through their teeth). Folks can still get really, really good ga** coins from Schoolcraft, Lassen, and Auke Van D (don't remember how to spell his last name, he's the Dutch Coin guy). Of course we're all talking about quality affordable ga** coins. They're hard to find. If it were me and I suggest looking to Ebay an other sources for Johnson or Sterling magic. FYI Sterling was better than SASCO by a somewhat large margin, but well behind Johnson.
