Our local chapter of SAM hosts an annual close-up competition. Last year they introduced the theme of doing restaurant magic. This year it is walkaround magic like at a cocktail party... no tables.
At the restaurant competition I one People's Choice Award. This was a great honor because it let me know that I accomplished exactly what I set out to do... entertain. This year, I would love to take home a prize from the judges. Any advice on how to impress the judges would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks, Darsh |

Ask each person in attendance for a small $1 note and give it back to them after turning it into a $100. I'm sure that will earn you their vote.

I like the way you think, Steve... unfortunately, I can only afford to do that with fifties! :o)

Okay.
Richard Sander's Extreme Burn is your must do opener. After that, I personally would do my thimble routine followed by ring manipulation. However the person that one at the 2010 UK IBM micro-marathon (walk-around close-up table magic) did Morgan Streblers Liquid Metal (fork bending). The 2009 winner did Bottle through table (Fay Presto). So maybe look at those routines as they seem to be ready-to-go winners. Steve |

Funny... my friend Joe Riggs won this competition three years ago with Liquid Metal. I do it all the time but the judges have definitely seen it before.
I'm thinking about opening with a card to pocket routine which ends with a complete deck vanish and then go into Rich Ferguson's Serial Biller. My card to pocket routine showcases some advanced sleight of hand technique - including a very deceptive double lift - and my routine for Serial Biller includes a mismade dollar bill and some flash paper. In a room full of laymen it TOTALLY kills but I think the judges will appreciate the showmanship behind it. Wish me luck. The competition is next Tuesday. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for all the advice! |

At the Daytona Magic Convention there is a table hopping contest and when I was there a couple years back EVERY performer that came up to my table did that stupid trick. And just like proper little magic club coddlers everyone pretended like it was the most amazing thing since penicillin. Seriously, horrible advice. If you want to impress people just show them something the haven't seen before, especially not a dozen different times in the same evening! No Extreme Burn, no Pressure, none of that junk. Buy a book, or two, and find something that you have never seen before and odds are neither will the rest of the magic club coddlers and then they will be genuinely impressed. |

Sorry, but can people stop spelling "Won" as "One". It is shameful...

You know, dove productions, appearing candles, T & R newspaper etc. Things people have seen a million times. He did this to boring classical music and his costuming wasn’t original either, just a black tux. Of course, he went on to win the stage competition at FISM and later sign a 100 million dollar contract in Las Vegas. But, please, if you want to impress people, do something original!

The only magic competition I ever "won", was the strolling olympics comedy strolling at the big I.B.M. convention in Kansas City. Things I did included:
1. change my levels of energy and height a. This included the usual: I stand ..audience standing b. I stand the audience at tables c. I asked to sit while audience was sitting. d. Literally got down on the floor to share magic with folks that were leaning against a pillar e. Got on a chair to end a straight jacket routine with a bit of magic in the middle when my hands were free f. ended with the tag line Cleveland Rocks..after changing a coin to a rock... The next years big I.B.M. convention was in Cleveland 2. Used things I was familiar with while improvising comedy with each group. In many local competitions I tried to create a competition act. 3. Through fear out the window...something that tends to attack me when I see a knowledgeable magician as one of the judges... Enjoy! Harris still too old to know everything

In my oppinion there are to way to make succes.
1. Take a solid classic effect and make you own unique presentation. 2. find an effect and change it so much that it becomes your own. Dealers items are NOGO if you want to win. |

Whatever effect you do, make sure it has an element that will take the judges by suprise, that is what all audiences want, judges or lay people, and it gets genuine reactions from them.
