Have you ever been handed a deck that was in awful shape and asked to “show off”?

I remember early on in my days of starting card magic I got handed a deck of cards that were one of those that someone had been playing regular games with for what must have been months if not years I made the mistake of trying a trick that included elmsley counts and a DL or two. Of course the cards stuck together at a couple times in the trick, and those had to be the most unconvincing DLs I've ever done, as the cards were warped beyond beleif. Needless to say, I don't think I fooled anyone with that trick. (can't even remember what it was now) Believe it or not I really didn't know any self working tricks at that point, most of what I knew was from a book that started off teaching slight of hand and did not include many self working tricks at all.
Nowadays I've got several completely self-working tricks that I use for such occasions. Generally I'll use Prefiguration, which is an almost self working prediction type trick. Or else I might use a key card location. Basically anything that doesn't require any precision moves, but still gets a great reaction.

I heard from a friend that anecdotal evidence is actually quite reliable. |

If you were a master guitar player, and someone handed you a toy guitar, what would you do? You'd say, "I use a real guitar. Let me get mine out of the car..." or something like that. If you're doing truly awesome stuff with cards, they will understand. If you go to all the trouble of breaking out your own pack, though, you'd better be really good! Of course, if you don't have your own cards with you, you ought to show them a couple of one handed cuts (you can do that with blocks of wood), and then blow their mind with a trick that can be done with any ragged deck!
