Hello,
I'm looking to drill a half inch hole into the bottom of a glass bottle. It was an expensive bottle, and I'm nervous about breaking the bottle. Does anyone have any recommendations for the type of drill bit for drilling into a glass bottle? Thanks, Rich |

You need a diamond bit, not a standard drill bit. You need a rotary tool or drill that has varible speed, and you can drill slowly. You have to keep it wet with either oil or water while drilling to keep it from over heating.

Slowly, carefully, well lubricated and use a drill press. Beware of chipping as the tip of the bit breaks through to the inside of the bottle. Good Luck!

A masonary drill bit will work. I have drilled 1/8" and 1/4" holes in the side of a glass with this bit. Best if used in a drill press. Add a little cutting oil to the spot, although at the time I just used regular motor oil. Masonary drill bits are used to drill in concrete cement.

I've had good luck with these glass and tile cutting drill bits from harbor freight:
