I first thought about a subscription to be the answer but now I'm guessing this will not happen.
A lot of the traffic comes from those that just want to view the latest Vids uploaded they don't even bother to comment on them which is a shame some vid's can have 200 views with just a couple of comments on them. Also many only come here to use the search feature to check out the latest product, maybe Steve can make this search feature for those long term members only or in a small Subscription feature upgrade. Again, http://www.searchthemagiccafe.com is a fast and easy way to search for anything on the Café. It's what I've been using to search and it works like a dream.
If you're looking for new products, the Latest and Greatest and The Good, The Bad and The Garbage sections offer a wealth of information on what's out and what's soon to be released.

My two cents for what it's worth I see no value here on this site to justify going to a pay to play format that I can't find at other magicians forums like ellusionist, theory11, themagicsession, etc for free.
I think a pay to play format would do more harm here than good. |

I very much appreciate folks chiming in with their own thoughts and opinions. Afterall, that's what this community is really all about.
Having said that, the changes which are coming have been in the works for some time now and will be taking place in the very near future. I'm really not at liberty to spill all the beans just yet. However, I can say that we will be adding a few new features that most everyone will surely like and benefit from. In addition, we are taking steps to help make the Café a more enjoyable place for everyone, registered members and lurkers alike. While some will not embrace these changes easily, the majority of serious minded folk will readily accept them with open arms. As I have stated in the past, the Café is ever a work in progress. Always changing, adding new things and getting rid of stuff that just doesn't work. I appreciate the ongoing support of our entire community and hope that most will realize that anything that we do is for the mutual benefit of all. Stay tuned...

As a new user, but one who has used other forums and social media of all kinds, I haven't found really a whole lot of abuse. And although I only registered a couple of days ago, I had been finding topics on the forum and using it for quite some time. I may be new here but I'm no newbie.
Steve, I'm looking forward to the changes. But adding to this thread here, just in being here a couple of days, I've noticed some things that might be useful. Weighting membership solely on the number of posts may be part of the problem. While I've become as adept at ignoring useless posts as I have the French Pass, it seems some people may just be adding comments to raise their post number. That said, the people at the upper end do provide valuable posts. I'm just saying weighting access to secure areas on numbers alone may encourage rampant, but not valuable posting. I'm not a coder or web builder, just a user, so I just throw out this next thought in that context. I don't know if you could put a "like" button on the posts -- i.e. Facebook -- or something. Maybe a combination of posts, people who have their posts quotes and "likes" could replace the sheer number of posts. This is not meant as a criticism to a forum I find fantastic. Just trying to provide some helpful feedback and some initial observations. I've seen a lot of complaints about the search function but I didn't have a problem, once I figured out you couldn't search "all forums." I quickly looked up the topic and found that doing that would slow the function down to a crawl, rendering it useless. If I can't find what I'm looking for in a particular forum. Or if I want to see if what I'm posting has already been addressed and I just don't know which forum to use, I go to Google. Type in the topic, and "Magic Café" and it serves as a crazy fast way to search all the forums. I'm also going to add that last thought to the forum talking about the search function, if you don't mind, to make it easier for folks to find the suggestion. All this is trying to be helpful. Please don't fumigate me. |

At last a thread with meaningful comments and quite enjoyable to read. I don't know if the changes are in effect or not, however, in conversations with others, it has been said quite a few times, the Magic Café is once again enjoyable to read. It seems those who make it a game to destroy the Café are gone. I for one hope it stays that way.
This thread is a pure example of what I am talking about. Many thanks to the posters!

--When I see a annoying (to my thinking) thread I scroll past it.
--What I see (what I consider a nasty remark) I skip reading it. --Often (my opinion only) when I see a really dumb question I ignore it. --Sometimes I jump in and I'm sarcastic, or tongue in cheek, or try to bring some sanity (so I'm as "guilty" as the next guy at times.) If you want to go to other forums, you're free to do so. Speaking of FREE this one is, no one's asking you to pay to be insulted. And, I find far more value than I do fighting. That's how I handle the whole deal. Thanks for trying to find solutions Steve, but no need for the guys to back you into a corner …where you're stifling creative advice or free thought either. My two-cents, Walt |

In a few short months this forum has inspired me, and shown me more information than a lifetime of haunting libraries, shows and shops and racking my brain and performing. In my experience in other forums, open membership, with strong moderation makes for the most vital forum. I'm on board with whatever it takes to keep the forum up and running, however. Payed membership, restricted access, volunteering, whatever, I appreciate this forum a lot.

How about a "Pay to Play Section"?
A specific zone, invisible to others for those who pay. I would gladly do this and it would add some well needed cash into Steve's pocket. The threads could consist of the most popular threads and maybe some slight variations...not sure...just brainstorming here. Kind of like the Box Seats of the Magic Café. Just a thought.

I am anxious to see what Steve has in mind, because there is both the fear of going too far, and the fear of not going far enough. I have learned a lot here, and I hope the magic Café of the future isn't the dull boring place that some of the people posting here would like it to become.
Silverking I had no idea that the genii forum welcomes non subscribers again, what a dull place that is.

I think some type of overhaul would be good. Sites need refreshes every few years to keep them energized and such..

There has been a long-running thread on the "Penny" forum concerning the true identity of someone (NOT BTW a Café subscriber) who writes and publishes using a pseudonym. Early in the thread one of his friends posted that the person in question had legitimate and understandable reasons for keeping his true identity secret. A short while ago I noticed and reported a post (the first post by a new subscriber) that appeared to have violated that person's desires in that regard.
I am glad to see that the offending post was deleted in short order and just wanted to take a moment to thank the moderator responsible for removing it for doing so in such a timely manner. Thank you!
