Ahh the shiner. I remember hearing a story about the man who claimed to stab anyone with his knife if they were caught cheating. In stating this the man took out his knife and laid it on the table for the intimidation factor. Ironically, the man used the knife's blade as a shiner to spot cards he dealt. Whether this is a true story or not I don't know.

Here is a part of the book Sharps and Flats that deals with shiners.

More recently casinos have caught people using hidden cameras at table level to see the dealer's cards.

This only works well when the deck and cards are dealt in exactlt the same spot on the table every time because the camera muct be focused on that area.

It is not practical to keep focusing the camera on different areas of the table as cards are being dealt.

It would be like constantly adjusting your periscope to monitor your subject...your body language will tip the gaff.

Someone has told you that? Did you read it in "how they cheat you at poker"? That story has been around since the gunfighters.

Its funny because some one did tell me that. I know its pretty popular story. I think I read it in "How to cheat your friends at poker". But I heard it from a friend at a magic club I attend.

Shiners are a thing of beauty. I am a mentalist and have been producing these gems for some time now. You can read and see more about the ones I make at http://glisk.weebly.com/shiners.html if you wish.

The Quarter shiners are made from a new clad quarter .the reflective side is silver and not copper These are very hard to produce to say the least. I am currently make some select models in international coinage as well.

Here is a short story about how I first got into producing shiners. I learned how to make these from an old crooked riverboat gambler who was working heavy during the 1960's and early 1970's. Frank was his name and I first met him at a show I was doing years back. Frank was a old school fedora wearing hustler from a time forgotten. This guy single handedly showed me more about working a shiner and a deck of playing cards than any other individual I have ever meet before or since. Needless to say Frank took me under his wing and showed me how to make shiners of all types. There is still a few types of shiner that I will never reveal because they are so cleverly hidden I still use one of this in my own show. I also used the coin shiners in my show on a regular basis. But there is this one type of shiner I will never reveal. Since you can be looking straight at it and wont even know its a shiner. The thing is diabolical.

Frank used it on me for a very long time before I even noticed it for what it really was.

I just stopped by this room to see if anyone had information on the new remote units for crocked gambling and got side tracked with this great topic. Oh well back to the search.

Cheers

Bill, is the, umm, "diabolical" shiner something custom built, or a real world device, ala a cup of coffee, or something.

Rudy Hunter has a pretty little book on the subject called slap a steak on that thing that comes with a shiner.
You can find it on Martini's magic: http://www.martinismagic.com/Products.html

It's nice but he uses it for magic...

Bill, your shiners might be even better if they were convex instead of flat.

As far as flat nickel shiners, I'd grab mine for $5 from gamblingcollectibles.com. Not that I need to, mind you, since I got lucky some time back and got the Allen/Giorgio shiner, which is pretty nice. Unfortunately, it was limited and now out of print.

I've seen protective plastic films for the iphone that make it reflect a lot when it's off (almost like a mirror), but you can hardly see a difference when it's on. Apple doesn't seem to have them, but I've seen them for sale at the AT&T store. This might look too suspicious in practice though.

Where the hell do you play? Even in the very low games I've played (like $20 or $25 buy-in) phones were forbidden around the tables.

Ah that's the beauty of finding a pub who haven't run poker games before and the normal etiquette rules are relaxed.
